Join the The Plummer DNA Project

Updated 23 March 2013

The Plummer surname DNA project would like to test the hypothsis that John and Richard Plummer living in Bedford/Huntingdon Counties in PA during the late 1700's  were related.  John Plummer was killed by the indians ca 1780 in PA.   The project is willing to subsidize a test for a individual (direct male line) descendant from John Plummer through his great- great -grandson Clyde Plummer.  Clyde had 3 sons.  The project is offering to subsidize only one descendant from this line, so the early bird gets the free 12 marker test! ** There are at least three known Plummer male descendants from this line.

**For the free 12 marker test above, acceptance of the subject is at the discretion of the project co-admin (i.e., upon the project co-admin's satisfaction that there is a valid paper connection between the test subject and the ancestor) and the test subject must agree to sign the Release to allow sharing of his test results.  Please note that sharing of results does not mean sharing of identity.  Only the project administrator, FamilyTreeDNA, and matching test subjects will necessarily know the identity of the test subject. (In this case, the matching test subjects are descendants of Richard Plummer).

Donations to the Plummer Project DNA General Fund

On occasion a Plummer would like to participate in the DNA Project but lacks the necessary funds to do so. Other times we may find a willing DNA donor in a branch that has yet to be tested but he is not interested in genealogy or paying for the test.

Since the project is open to all Plummer males - we hate to miss any opportunity. You never know what the next result will bring.   With the help of our testing company, we have established the Plummer DNA General Fund. When you click on the link below - you will be transferred to a contribution form at FTDNA. You will have the option of making a payment by mail, credit card, or PayPal. All are fairly simple processes.  Make sure you enter "Plummer" in the Surname Project box.
If you wish to contribute to a specific Plummer line - please let me know via email.   If there is no preference then it will be used for one of the future participants. The total cost of one 12 marker test is $101; the total cost of one 25 marker test is $169; the total cost of one 37 marker test is $191, and the total cost of a 69 marker test is $271. Smaller donations are also being accepted  i.e. $10 - $100.
Remember, if you are uncomfortable using any of these method, you can contact me and make a donation the old fashion way via check through the mail.    Thank You.

What are the specifics?

  • The test will be conducted by Family Tree DNA, of Houston TX, the World's leading testing company for Surname DNA Projects. The cost per participant is dependent on the number of markers tested, but all tests include an estimate of the Haplogroup (an indication of deep ancestry).

We recommend that one purchase at least a 37 marker kit. This is adequate resolution to say that two people have a common ancestor and thus begin exploration of each other's genealogies. The higher resolution 67 marker kit allows one to make a better estimate of how many generations ago two people share a common ancestor. The higher resolution is necessary when one must examine conflicting genealogies or provide corroborating evidence to support a hypothesis or theory. A 25 marker test is available; however the resolution to say within how many generations that two people have a common ancestor is not as refined. Finally, a 12 marker test is available as well but is useful only in showing that two people are not related. Nevertheless, some partcipants have bought the 12 or 25 marker kit with an eye to upgrading once a match is realized, akin to an installment plan.  The upgrade will cost a few dollars more. Please keep in mind that with each upgrade you will still have the 6 weeks wait while the upgrade is processed.
