Research in progress.

Please excuse the mess.  I will clean it up soon and create real patriarch lists (direct-line-male).

Finding Maher / Meagher patriarchs by brute force.

Unless otherwise stated, data is from Rootsweb or Ancestry.

Reminders for self:

Have I bit off more than I can chew???  Remember need SOURCE data for everything.

Search Maher-L and Meagher-L mailing list archives - didn't do yet.

Rootsweb surname - Maher message board - 1998 done.  Start 1999, work towards present.

Rootsweb surname - Meagher message board - haven't started yet.

Ancestry - only searched for Co Clare Maher / Meagher, need to search for all.

Search WorldConnect for O'Meagher / Meagher prior to 1800 - too crazy to try to record all Maher / Meagher patriarchs after 1800.  There are 25,000 hits on Maher.

James MAHER and Margaret BARRY who came to Australia in the mid 1800's.

My fathers name was Samuel Patrick Maher born in England in 1915.
His mother was Mary Maher who lived in 1915 at 58 KINGS AVENUE, WATFORD. ENGLAND and was listed as a DOMESTIC SERVANT on his birth certificate.
I believe Mary Maher may have married in approximately 1920. I was told that my father was placed in an orphanage in London at this time.
Maybe we can help each other
Jennie Maher

James Joseph Maher, he is my husbands great grandmothers full brother, (grandmother) Alice Maher, who for some reason changed her surname to MEAGHER, she had a child Monica, who had a son Brian, who is my husbands father.

Reginald Northey , not sure , until I joined ancestry my father in law did not even think James Joseph had married or had any children, this side of the family - any decendants from James Joseph are the only full relatives my father in law would have, and we dont know anything about anyone only what I have come across in Ancestory, I would love to hear from you to fill in lots of missing pieces

Catherine Maher. She was born in Ireland in Kings County as far as I know. I have her baptism date which is 18.04.1841, which I got 2 years ago. As I haven't been doing anything with my genealogy for 2 years I can't remember where I got it.

I also have her parents names which are John Maher & Juliana Bergin. (Got these from her marriage cert) She married Robert Barlow in 1862.

John Maher, who married Catherine Fay (Fahy, Fahey?) on August 15, 1878 at St. Francis Church in Metuchen, NJ. He was my great grandfather. Had three sons, John, Willie and Edward. My grandfather John raised a family of Mahers in Brooklyn, NY. Elder John Maher may have lived in Pennsylvania. I know of a cousin, Alice Maher whose line goes to Tom and Alice (brother and sister?) of Pennsylvania.

Co. Tipperary

The ancestor in question is William Maher. We believe he was born in North Tipperary, with father John Maher and mother "in doubt". One source (William's death certificate), claims his mother as "Bridget Cronin". But his first-born daughter was baptized Mary ("Mamie"), and his second-born "Helen" ("Nellie"), and there were no other children named "Bridget".

William was born in approximately 1843 (give or take a few years), and emigrated to the States in 1866 - settling in Cleveland, Ohio. The family story was that he had fallen in love with one Mary Burke, who may have been a domestic in the Maher household. Mary was apparently sent to the States (to remove her influence on young William!), but William was clearly in love and decided to follow, emigrating on his own in 1866. (There was, at any rate, no evidence of other relatives with him in Cleveland.)

William and Mary were married in about 1866-67, and had their first child in 1868. After Mary (married Rushforth) and Helen (unmarried), they had three more girls: Margaret (married Lafferty), Anna (married Dougherty) and Catherine (married Ames). They then had a boy named John.

I have had most of the available church records searched in North Tipperary for Baptisms between 1840 and 1849, without coming up with a plausible match. Should any of the other Maher relatives have any relevant information, I would be most appreciative. Given the fact that William was the only one of his immediate family to emigrate to the Cleveland area, I'm intrested in making contact with descendants of the family in Ireland.

Many thanks,

William Maher Lafferty

Martin Maher 1876-1/17/1961 from Tipperary. Father, Frank & brother Dennis. This Matin Maher, had a movie made of his life at West Point called "The Long Gray Line" (1955). An autobiography co-written with Nardi Reeder Campion entitled "Bringing Up the Brass" also exsists. Martin married Mary O'Donnell, they had no children. I believe his brother Dennis married Mary ? and had a daughter Margaret(Margret). I can't find anything else from this point. Some how my step-grandfather Edward Lawrence Maher is related.

John Frawley b. Labasheeda, Co. Clare m. Catherine Mayer or Maher b. 1805-8. She came to Ansonia, CT as a widow around 1850 with 4or 5 boys; John,James,Thomas and Michael (one may have died enroute). Any info on Families in Ireland? I have much data on CT time.

John FRAWLEY born circa 1825 m Catherine MAHER/MAYER/MYERS. Apparently Catherine came to Ansonia, Connecticut, USA with at least four boys: James, Thomas b. 1840, m. Mary McMahon (Miltown Malbay), John b. 1842 m. 9 Mar 1866 Mary Finnucan and Michael b.1845 m. 10 Jan 1866 Mary Finnucan (cousin of the other Mary Finnucan). Family lore indicates that the father died maybe some children remained in Ireland Catherine died 4 July 1885. The grave stone states that she was from Killofin, Labasheeda, County Clare. The birth dates of the sons were extrapolated from the 1900 US census.

My Grandmother was Mary Kelly and my Grandfather was John Maher { not 100% on his christian name, as he is not on all of the children's birth certificate} They were both from County Clare and married in Sth Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. Any help would be great. You can e-mail me on minimee (at) ozemail (dot) com (dot) au. Thanks, Rachel.

Co. Longford

I am looking to get in touch with any Mahers whose families may have originated in County Longford, Ireland. My branch is specifically from the Longford town area (Coolnahinch and White Rock) in the Templemichale parish. I have hit a dead end and would appreciate any help. Thanks!

Hi, my Maher ancestors came from Newtownforbes, Clonguish, Longford. William Maher and his wife, Mary (probably nee Whalen), had children there in the 1820s and '30s. Mary died in Jersey City, N.J., in 1868; William may have emigrated as well. Known children are James, John, Peter, William, Catherine, Mrs. Thomas Thompson and Mrs. William Boyle. The family apparently settled in Jamaica, L.I., before dispersing.

Montreal, Canada

My great-grandmother was ELLEN MEAGHER, who married DENIS MCCARTHY before 1878. I am estimating that she was born about 1850-1858;
