I see the Amer name in the list of variants.  A similar surname is in my line and quite mysterous.  It is Fannie Omer from Sturgis, Union County, KY b abt 1835 m my gg gf William G. Henry.  I know nothing about my Omers.

I have read that the Omer name may be connected to the Ammer name. says Omer is "French: from a Germanic personal name composed of the elements aud ‘wealth’ + mari, meri ‘renowned’. As a Huguenot name, it is also found in Germany.  Possibly a respelling of German Ohmer."

For Ammerman it says, "Americanized spelling of German Ammermann, a regional name for someone from Ammerland, an area in Oldenburg."

For Ammer is says, "from Middle High German amer ‘bunting’ (the bird), hence a nickname for someone with a fine voice, or a flamboyant dresser.   In southern Germany, possibly a topographic name for someone living by the Ammer river."

Also according to Ancestry the largest number of Omer families in the 1920 census were in NY, IL & KY with 14 to 26 families.  Ammer is more rare but Ammerman is much more common.
