As a child I heard that a distant Hunter was actually named Huntoon.  The story was that "Hunter" came back from America and did not want to return but rather stay in England.

"Huntoon" (which would be one of my great-plus grandfathers) wanted to go to America, but could not get papers, so Hunter gave Huntoon his papers and we have been known as Hunters ever since. (So  I guess we are Illegals, lol).

Are there any Huntoons out there that have heard that story in their family? Or maybe Hunters would know?

I'm new at this and a little overwelmed, but will try to include more information if I can find the old family papers.  Thanks for your consideration.
