I am looking for a way to trace my father's heritage.  His grandfather was adopted, but family told history places him as a Whitecotton (Smith or his cousin Morgan).  Hoping the Y-DNA test can provide some answers.  I have the lineage traced to 1400 AD thru Ancestry.com ~~ but would like to know for sure that this is correct.  I have not ordered test yet--any advise on which test--or if this will work??

Here is last 9 generations:
Isham Whitecotton  1656-1743
Mealy Whitecotton  1681-1733
George Whitecotton  1707-1744
George Whitecotton   1729-1756
James Whitecotton  1750-1849
Aaron Whitecotton  1778-1870
Smith Whitecotton  1830-1892
Morgan POTTER  1867-1953  (biological son of Smith??)
Britton Z Potter  1898-1984
