I am a TOLLIVER. DNA shows a close link to OLIVER (light green line) and line IV Trimble (Francis Hans and D.) Both the OLIVER and TURNBULL families are from the Middle March of the Scottish - English Borders. In fact, the OLIVERs and TURNBULLs show an even closer relationship with each other. The OLIVER DNA project results are on-line.

My family were Scots-Irish who were in the American colonies before 1750. We have documentary proof of births in 1755 and 1756 in Fauquier County, VA.  We are NOT related to the TALIAFERRO (pronounced toliver) family of Virginia and don't really know how we came to have the surname. My guess is our ancestor followed the old Scottish custom of taking on the surname of a powerful clan/family we he entered their territory.

We are trying to find our missing link who probably left Ulster during the first half of great migration of 1717 - 1776.

Any information would be much appreciated.

Ed Tolliver
