Most Drew lines stem from roots in either England or Ireland, with the English families generally being protestant and the Irish Catholic.  The Drew's in Longford, Ireland are particularly interesting because some preliminary DNA results seem to show a very close connection to a colonial American Drew line - the Cattaraugus Drew's.  Also some of the Longford Drew families appear to have been protestant, indicating an English heritage.

County Longford is part of the Irish "midlands" region, located slightly north of the halfway point between Dublin to the east, and Galway to the west.  Much of Longford lies in the basin of the river Shannon.

Historically, Longford has seen mixing of English and Irish settler's.  King James I in 1608 divided the county into six baronies. These were planted by English and Scottish landowners in 1620, with much of the Irish lands being confiscated and granted to new owners. The change in control was completed during the Cromwellian plantations of the 1650s, when more English settlers were relocated there.

Longford also has a connection with the American Revolution. The county was involved in the 1798 Irish rebellion.  A French military force, fighting in support of the Irish  was defeated there by a British army led by none other than Lord Cornwallis, the losing general at Yorktown, Virginia.

Could two English Drew brothers have gone separate ways in the 1650s, one to America and the other to Ireland?  Or perhaps a colonial Drew, loyal to the king, left America for a new life in Ireland either as a farmer or as a soldier with Cornwallis?  Or were the colonial ancestors of the Cattaraugus Drew's originally from Ireland?  Hopefully, with enough research and y-DNA testing, we'll be able to shed light on the origins of the Longford Drew's.

It would be wonderful if I could trace my great-great grandfather's family background as I have been trying online for years without success.
William Drew was born in Longford, Co Longford in 1797 and died in Edinburgh, Scotland on 18 December 1869.   He was the son of William Drew and  his mother's maiden surname was (I think) Butler.
William Drew and Jane Morton married on 3 January 1824 in Anna, Co Cavan, Ireland.  They had seven children, and I will list them in the hope there may be a traditional family name.
    i.  Francis Drew b. 1826 England  d. 6 Jan 1862 Edinburgh, Scotland
ii.  Richard Drew b. about 1828 (no further info)
iii.  Jane Drew b. about 1832 in Ireland d. 27 Dec 1873 Edinburgh
  iv.  Frances Drew b. abt 1837 England  d. 17 Aug 1860 Edinburgh
   v.  Barbara Ann Drew b. about 1839  Edinburgh
vi.  Matilda Drew  b. about 1845 Perth (Scotland)  d. 20 Sept 1898 Edinburgh
 vii.  Elizabeth Drew b. abt 1849 Edinburgh  d. 23 July 1894 Edinburgh
               - this was my great grandmother (my grandfather's mother)
William served in the 7th Dragoon Guards and was paid a pension up until he died.   At one time he worked as a valet.
Jane Morton (later Drew) was born abt 1806 in Belturbet, Co Cavan, and died in Edinburgh on 27 January 1893.
I would love to know more about William Drew.   By all account he was a real gentleman, which would be a requirement for him to work as a valet.
This is all the information I have.   Anything anyone can add would be most welcome.
Thank you!

G'day All,

I would like to post a request for any information on my Drew family.

My Grandfather on my mothers side was Robert Drew born about 1862. He had a sister Mary Jane born about 1872 and a brother William. Robert was born in Newtown Forbes. He and his sister immigrated to Queensland, Australia. Not sure
about William.

The parents were a James Drew and Jane McCredden.  If anyone has ties with this family, I'd love to hear from you.   I'll post my full line below, as well as some other Drew's I've found during my Longford research.  I don't know how, or even if, these others are connected.

There was mention that the Drew family in Longford originated from either the Scottish borders or the north of England and that they were brought over with Lord Granard when he was granted Longford property in the 1600's. Heresay or truth, I don't know.

Thanks and cheers,
Dave Prince
