I am a decendent of Daniel Stroud b. 1829 in TN d. 1911 Newton, MS.  However, we have been unable to trace his origin.  Census records from AL in the mid-1800s record him as born in TN.  Others have said that he lived with another family in Georgia before moving to Mississippi.  It would be interesting to see if genetically our Stroud males are more losely associated with one group of Strouds more than another.  Is that possible?

Southeast Alabama Strouds ---Early Settlers

Alabama became a state on December 14, 1819.  By 1828, Strouds were in the area.

"Some of the Old Settlers and the Names of Their Sons Who Lived in or Near
the Junction of the East and West Choctawhatchee Rivers Dale County Ala-
bama Prior to 1860" by "Wm. E. Mathews Name Changed to W. E. Preston."
The index was compiled by Eustus (?) Howard Hayes, March 28, 1956. The
following is a copy of the Stroud data.

Stroud, David     Wheelwright and Turner Sons Norman, James
                      and Hyrum
                  Stroud, Kit         1828
                     "   Richard         1828
(The information above is spaced as it appears on the document.)

It is likely that James Stroud, Kit Stroud, and Richard Stroud remained in Alabama.
Apparently Hyram (Hirum) and Norman* Stroud did not remain in Alabama, nor do their names appear among the descendants of  the Strouds who stayed in Alabama.  A  "Hiram" Stroud is listed on the 1850 Robertson County, Tennessee, Census and a Hiram Stroud settled in Indiana. Norman Stroud has not been found.

The following Strouds were later recorded in the same area.

Richard Stroud is listed on the 1840 Federal Census, Dale County, Alabama, census, as follows

1 m  -5;  1 m  5-10;  1 m  10-15;  1 m  40-50;  1 f   -5;  1 f   10-15;  1 f   15-20;  1 f   40-50

Listed below Richard Stroud are  John Metcalf, Antony Metcalf, and Antony Metcalf  (not sure if there were two Anthony Metcalfs or if this was an error  - A. Richards).  Clayton G. Metcalf of  Enterprise who volunteered much time to the Coffee County Historical Society, believed that one of his Metcalf ancestors married a daughter of a Richard Stroud.

This land was originally in Coffee County (which later became a part of Dale County).

Chrstopher(Kit) Stroud  was born in North Carolina (according to his descendants). He married Charity Wilson in North Carolina. His family settled in Pike County, Alabama in the 1840s ( not far from the Coffee County Strouds). The Pike County Strouds and the Coffee County Strouds called each other  "cousins."

On December 4, 1851, George Stubblefield* either bought land or obtained bounty land in Pike County.  He sold this land to John Strow(d) of Pike County on May 4, 1852.  George Stubblefield is listed on the 1860 Tennessee Census as living with Sarah Stroud, widow of Walter R. Stroud (son of Anderson Stroud, brother to Wade Stroud).  Wade Stroud married Nancy Stubblefield.  Anderson Stroud married Louisa Rand in 1768.

According to another Stroud researcher, James Stroud of Eugene, Oregon, the Strouds, Stubblefields, Smartts, and Ramseys went as a colony from North Carolina to Tennessee.  In a letter dated January 5, 1994, Mr. Stroud states  "William Stroud (III) was my great-great grandfather.  He migrated into what is now Warren County, Tennessee, from North Carolina in the company of Stubblefields, Smartts, and Ramseys shortly after 1800.  His wife was Nancy Stubblefield; a seccnd was a Ramsey."

--Christopher Stroud's son, Edward, named a son George Anderson Stroud.

-Christopher had a son named David Anderson Stroud.  David had twins  Walter Wallace Stroud and William Wilson Stroud.

-1850 Coffee County, Tennessee Census  Stroud, Walter 44, Sarah 39, Anderson 19, Mary 17, George 14, Jane 12, Louisa 11, Nancy 10, Martha 6, Walter 4, Sarah 3.  Walter was reported as being born in NC.  Nancy  was reported as being born in Tennessee.

-1860 Coffee County Tennessee Census Stroud, Sarah 50, Nancy 19, Martha 16, Walter 14, Sarah 12, George Stubblefield  80.

Christopher Stroud's family was related to George  Stubblefield.  These Strouds were from North Carolina.  In later years,  family members migrated to Tennessee and Alabama.

Norman Stroud has not been found.

Thanks for posting, RWStroud.  I added your line to the other John md. Hanna line.  We could really use your DNA.  There are two completely different DNA results for men who believe they are descendants of this John.  The first (John, William, John) is posted to the results page as S-1.  A description of the other (John, William, William) can be found on the Notes page under the heading Southeast USA I2b lineage.   Feel free to email me using the link at the bottom of any of the Stroud/Strode/Strowd DNA project pages for more information.

Some interesting historical information I've found:

Oliver S and Oliver William both fought in the Civil War for the 29th Iowa Infantry Regiment.
Oliver S was killed at the Battle of Jenkins' Ferry on the Saline River, Grant county, Arkansas, April 30, 1864

"It has been passed down that his son Oliver William Stroud, jr., who was in the same unit, saw his father fall on the battlefield, but Oliver's burial site is unknown
No burial record was found in VA National Cemeteries by Dept. of Veteran Affairs in letter dated 5-10-2002
No listing at Little Rock National Cemetery where many Union soldiers killed on Arkansas battlefields were buried after the war

from Journal of Addie Stephanna Hodges Martin
Oliver Stroud born Dec. 31, 1815, Essex Co., Willsborough Point, New York, was killed at the Battle of Jenkens Ferry Arkansas on Saline River April 30, 1864. A member of Company B 29th Regt. Iowa Vol. Inf. His Capt. was N. L. Andrews.

Oliver Stroud's enlistment papers indicated he was a blacksmith, with gray hair and gray eyes, dark complexion, 5' 11-1/2" tall" -> from

I have discovered a picture online of Oliver William and his family at

And a picture of Elvira Pizario Barnes Stroud (Oliver S) at

Zerviah Sturtevant (William Stroud) was a direct descendant of Mayflower passenger Francis Eaton who was the 9th signer (-or - Wikipedia lists him as the 23rd) of the Mayflower Compact.

Also from the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution in the DAR Lineage Book Volume 34, page 55:

"John Stroud, (1749-1840), enlisted 1775, under Capt. Benjamin Mann, Col. James Reed's regiment and was engaged fortifying Dorchester Heights. In 1777 he volunteered and was in the battle of Bennington in Stickney's regiment, Stark's brigade. He received a pension for twelve months actual service as private, New Hampshire line. He was born in Natick, Mass., removed to Rockingham, Vt., from there to Petersboro, N. H., and in 1830 to Essex County, N. Y., where he died."

MA Stroud line with new information on Abigail Stroud, second wife of John Stroud Sr., b. in Natick, MA and Rev War vet. NH House of Representative proceedings show Abigail Stroud and Isaiah Taylor petitioning for selling the estate of Nathaniel Bates, Abigail's first husband (who was killed at the Battle of Stillwater) in order to care for her two sons by Nathaniel Bates. The town of Peterborough records also show that Nabby Taylor married a Mr. Stroud and that she was the daughter of Isaiah Taylor of that town. Taylor was used often as a middle name in the family descendants of Charles T. (now known to be Taylor) Stroud, son of John Stroud Sr.

My Stroud line (after years of hunting):

1. William STROUD of Natick, MA; m. Martha BEAL ...his son...
 2. John STROUD (William) of Natick, MA; Nelson & Dublin, NH; Dummerston, VT; Clarksburg, MA; and Willsboro, NY (where he d. in 1840); m. (1) Elizabeth SMITH in Natick, MA; m. (2) Abigail/Nabby TAYLOR, widow of Nathaniel BATES of Dublin, NH and dau. of Isaiah TAYLOR and Marcy (??) of Peterborough, NH. [note: I can find no records of John Stroud ever being married to a Mary Bileathe]. ...his son by Abigail...
   3. Charles Taylor STROUD (John, William) of NH; Morristown, NY; Middelburg, OH (where he d.); m. Ann/Anna Percell/Percel/Parcel, dau. of Jacob and Rachel (KNAPP) PERCELL of Montgomery Co., NY. ...his son...
    4. Edmund C. STROUD of Morristown, NY; Middleburg, OH (where he d.); m. Elizabeth E. MICHENER/MITCHNER, dau. of Thomas V. and Nancy (CHENEY) MICHENER  ...his dau....
     5. Lucy A. STROUD of Middleburg & Berea, OH; Petoskey, MI (where she d.); m. William H. OHLE (a Civil War vet).

Note that DNA testing of a male descendant of 3. Charles T. Stroud's son Nathaniel B. Stroud (same as listed above) shows a direct link to 1. William Stroud of Natick, MA (nearly an exact match to other known descendants of 1. William).

Note also that I believe that there was likely a William Stroud before 1. William Stroud as listed above, who was the one born in 1700. I also believe that 1. William Stroud was born in 1721, and that his wife Martha BEAL was born shortly before she was bapt. in 1729. Martha Beal could not have had children as late as age 52, and I find it even less likely that William Stroud would have serverd in the Rev. War in his late 70's.

I have tons of information on the Strouds and related families listed here. I recently found the complete family history of the OHLE family of OH dating back to Germany, written in German.

Hi Scottsworth,

It's interesting that there was another Charles Taylor Stroud who had been born in New York and died in Erie Co. Ohio.  There was a Philo and David R Stroud, of New York and Michigan, who may have been connected to him.  Philo's death certificate listed his father as Joseph Stroud.  I wonder if that Joseph could have been the one in the same family Bible that listed your Charles T as the son of John and Abigail?

Sorry for the long delay in a reply to this, I have been buried with work the last few months.

Yes, there were others named Charles Stroud in NY at that time. I researched the ones in Madison Co, NY and I had dismissed them before, but as it turns out they were related to my line. The elder one was the son of (3)John Stroud Jr. ((2)John, (1)William of Natick). He was the Charles who worked on the Erie Canal and is the one listed in the History of Madison CO, NY. He had a son Charles Stroud as well. (3) John Stroud Jr. and his brother William were interesting and mysterious persons. Why they both names sons "Dalmon" is beyond me to figure out.

There was also Charles Taylor Stroud, clearly listed as "Jr." in deeds in OH that was the son of (3) Charles T. (Taylor) Stroud Sr. ((2)John, (1)William of Natick), and the main reason I attribute the middle name of Charles T. as Taylor (as well as Charles' mother being a Taylor). He would have lived in NY with his family near Moristown, NY before moving to OH with them. As Charles T. Stroud Sr. was born during the Rev. War, I believe that he did not have a middle name given until after the war (as he was born a British subject, a middle name would not have been legal to have until after the war was over and he became a US citizen, as was the case with all non-royal British subjects). Note that the Stroud names listed in the bible for John Stroud Sr.'s second family with Abigail were all lacking middle names.

The other Charles T. Stroud that you are referring to was born in NY in 1820 and a dentist in Erie, NY. Where he came from I do not know. He had children Clarence, Ida and Charles.

Philo's father Joseph Stroud was likely the brother of (3) Charles T. (Taylor) Stroud Sr. ((2)John, (1)William of Natick), yes. That Joseph has been an interesting research case as well, but more information is coming to light about him as well. He had another son Joseph Taylor Stroud, who had the son Milo Stroud. Milo and Philo... Milo is the name of my cat, BTW ;) Joseph Stroud is listed incorrectly in the 1840 census (what else is new?) as Joseph T Shand. Looking at the original census records it is obvious that it is actually Joseph T. Stroud. Like his brother, I believe that he took the middle name from his mother later in life, and he was Joseph Taylor Stroud (like his son). In the end he was likely the one listed as "Jas F." Stroud (Looking at the original records, I think it is Jos. T. Stroud), living with Milo Stroud (age 20) in WI in 1860. That census shows him as 86 years old, and having been born in NH. It all fits... its a wild family that survived the wars and moved all over the place and then some.

Back in 2008, I posted a speculation about the Madison Co. NY Strouds being connected to the William of Natick MA line.  I was hoping to get someone from the Madison Co. line to DNA test.  Since then it has turned up in family trees as fact.  I don't know if someone actually found documentation to connect them or if they just picked it up from my posting.  It would be so easy to clear this up with DNA testing.

The Erie Co. Ohio dentist was Charles Taylor Stroud (from a son's death certificate.  He had lived in New York near David R. Stroud and David R. Stroud was later found near Philo in Michigan.  So another speculation is that the three of them may have been sons of Joseph.  Again, DNA could help with this.

Well as for Joseph Stroud, IMO Joseph T. Stroud of Ellisburg, NY and later of Union, WI in 1860 (transcribed incorrectly as Jas F. Stroud) was the son of John Stroud Sr. originally of Natick, MA. and the brother of Charles T. Stroud. The brothers went to northern NY state, where Charles and his son Nathaniel B. incorrectly appear as "Strand" and Joseph appears as "Shand" in NY census record transcriptions. Looking at the original longhand census records, they are clearly Strouds. I believe that "Jas. F". in later WI is actually Jos. T. Stroud, living with his grandson Milo Stroud, age 20 before Milo enlisted in the Union Army. I believe that that record has his age transposed as well, and rather than being 86, he was 68. That would fit his birth date of 1791, and well as be a much better fit for living with a woman 61 years old.

Looking at the places where the three Stroud/Bates brothers lived: Nathaniel Bates moved to Sackets Harbor, NY, where he was listed as having served in the War of 1812. Charles T. Stroud is known to have come from Morristown, NY in OH records, and is mispelled in the census of NY in Rossie, as Charles 'Strand.' Joseph moved to Ellisburg, NY, where he is listed in the 1840 census as Joseph 'Shand'. Later records show Milo S. Stroud listed as having been born in Sandy Creek, NY, a stones throw from Ellisburg, NY. Those places are sparcely populated, even today. I find it nearly impossible that there would be some other clan of Strouds and Bates living in that area of NY with these same names.

In 1850, a Joseph T. Stroud of Sheboygan Co. WI received a government land grant in the same county. A Joseph T. Stroud purchased land in Waupaca Co., WI in 1856. A Joseph Stroud appears in the 1855 census of the Twp. of Plymouth, Sheboygan Co., WI. The Jos. T. Stroud listed in the 1860 census record was living in Union, Waupaca Co., WI. So from these records, I would say that Joseph Stroud Sr. was living in Union, Waupaca Co., WI, and the son was living in Plymouth, Sheboygan Co., WI at the same times. For some reason in 1860 Milo was living with his grandfather (not unheard of at that time, he likely was farming the land for his grandparents). Milo Stroud was in the CW, and he was wounded at Antidum. Milo's death cert. says that his parents were Joseph Stroud and Belinda Howard, of Canada. Likely there were born in the far reaches of upper NY and confused for Canada (as were many of the Stroud in many records), or it may be that his mother, Belinda Howard was born in Canada.

At any rate, that is the connection I make for Joseph Stroud, son of John Stroud Sr. originally of Natick, MA and his second wife, Abigail (Nabby) Taylor Bates-Stroud.

As for the Charles Strouds of Madison Co, NY, I was not aware of your supposition that you posted that he was related to John Stroud Sr of Natick, MA. I had done a lot of earlier research 12-15 years ago with several cousins, some of whom are no longer (sadly to say), and some whom have since deemed fit to attribute my Charles T. Stroud as being descended from Barnard Stroud (another incorrect link in the sea of dis-information on my line of MA Strouds, sadly). Ant any rate...

The PIONEER SETTLERS of Madison Co., NY says that Charles Stroud Sr. came from VT with his parents as a young boy. I ruled out John Stroud's brother William as being his grandfather, as they all moved to OH. I ruled out John Stroud's son Charles T. as the father, as he had a known son Charles Taylor, and they lived farther north in NY and later in OH. I also ruled out John Stroud's son William, as he moved to Willsboro NY with his family early on. So that left John Jr and Joseph (sons of John Sr or Natick, MA) as potential fathers of this Charles of Lenox, NY.

John Stroud Jr's youngest son Sylvanus was born in NY in 1812, so they moved there at some time just after 1810 where he was listed as living in Clarksburg, MA and/or nearby Stamford, VT. My research on the grist mill that John Stround Sr. owned in Clarksburg, MA shows that the mill was located in what was called no-man's land between the two states and between Clarksburg and Stamford. So the land it was on may have been registered as either or both at different times (the land deeds for the two John Strouds circa 1800 are confusing, and there was John Stroud III that stayed in that area as well). It is also possible that Charles was the oldest son of Joseph, as Joseph marries about 1810 and is listed as living in Paris, NY in 1820. That is very near Lenox, NY.

Anyway, that was where I was until this year when I came across the Elam & Franklin Gowdy family history that has information on the family of John Stroud Jr. in NY state. That says that Lucy Stroud Gowdy was the daughter of John Stroud, once of VT, and that her brother was Charles Stroud and that he was the superintendant of the Erie Canal (the same Charles Stroud of Lenox, NY). That article says that John Stroud had 5 sons, two of whom were representatives in the state of VT, so it is quite clear that this Charles Stroud was the son of John Stroud Jr. and the grandson of John Stroud Sr. of Natick, MA, VT, MA and later of NY. And to connect the dots, that makes him the half-nephew of my Charles T. Stroud (if you agree that John II and William Stroud were the sons of John Stroud Sr. by his first wife, Elizabeth Smith, as I believe they were).

Oh, and there is this for more corroberation on John Stroud Jr's family in NY, connecting Charles Stroud of Lennox to his brother Ira in VT:

From: Leading Citizens of Madison County
CHARLES E. STROUD, a worthy descendant of a pioneer farmer of the town of Lenox, was born May 28, 1832, in Madison County, N.Y., son of Charles and Dardena Stroud. His paternal grandfather migrated from Vermont to this part of New York State when the country was new to white settlers. Buying land and building a humble log cabin, he entered on a farmer's life of the most primitive simplicity in the town of Lenox, where he reared a large family, all now deceased but one, Ira Stroud, who lives in the State of Vermont.
Charles Stroud was but a small boy at the time of his father's removal to this State. He was reared in the town of Lenox, and became a prominent man, known all over the State as a contractor, much employed on government works. The bridges of the New York Central Railroad in this vicinity were built by him, and he was for a number of years Superintendent of the Erie Canal. He owned a farm in Lenox of over six hundred acres. He married and had eight children, two of whom are now living: Charles E., the eldest; and Seward H., a farmer of Canastota. The names of those who died are: Mrs. Eliza Corson, at the age of sixty-five; Albro B., sixty years; Sarah Ann, Mrs. John O. Corson, forty years; Perry G., at fifty-five; Ira, aged eighteen; Adelaide, at the age o£ seven. The father died at Canastota, after reaching the age of eighty-one. He was Supervisor in the town of Lenox for three terms, and was a Whig in politics. He and his wife, Dardena, were consistent and devoted members of the Methodist Episcopal church. Mrs. Stroud was born in New York State, and died in Canastota, at the age of eighty-three years. Her father was a soldier in the War of 1812.
Charles E. Stroud was brought up in the town of Lenox, and attended various schools, district and select, completing his studies in the seminary at Cazenovia. Until he was twenty years old he assisted his father on the farm. When he became of age, he started out for himself, and went to the West, where he remained five years, engaged in mercantile business, hotel-keeping, and farming in the States of Wisconsin and Illinois. Returning to New York State about the year 1857, he bought a farm of seventy-seven acres in the town of Lenox. In the course of the next few years he bought and sold different farms, but has now finally settled on the one he bought in 1866, consisting of sixty acres of arable land, on which fine crops of corn, wheat, oats, and hops are raised. He also has a dairy, his cows being of the famous Holstein breed.
In 1852 Mr. Stroud married Miss Sarah P. Benson, a native of England, who died July 18, 1888, leaving one son. He again married July 30, 1890, his bride being Mrs. Eliza Hughes, born in Wales. Charles H., son of our subject, is a railroad engineer, whose home is in Syracuse. In his politics Mr. Stroud is a firm supporter of the Republican party. He belongs to the Congregational church, and is a member of Sullivan Lodge, No. 148, A. F. & A. M. He is a man of more than ordinary intelligence, whose mind has been quickened by contact with the world, who in his varied experiences in different parts of the country has acquired a fund of interesting and valuable information. The name he bears is an honorable one in the records of the county.

Lucy Stroud Gowdy seems to be the key in the connection of this side of the family. I found this today looking for her online:

From: "Franklin GOWDY - Portrait and Biographical Record,"

His parents,Elam and Lucy (STROUD) GOWDY, were
long-time residents of the Empire State, but the father,a native New
 Englander,was born in Connecticut,October 20, 1788.

The maternal great-grandfather of our subject, John STROUD, was a man of
great strength of character and steadfast resolution. He served with
Washington in the war of the Revolution and afterward made his home in the
Green Mountain State, where the maternal grandfather, John STROUD,Jr., was
born, and at a good old age died. The STROUDS were people of position in new
England, and some of the mother's family were members of the Legislature. One
of the sons of Grandfather STROUD was born, reared, and died at the good old
age of eighty-five,upon the same farm, having spent his four-score years and
five without a single removal from the homestead. The parents of our subject
were devout members of the Baptist Church, but two of the great-uncles of
Mr. GOWDY,brothers of the paternal grandfather, were ministers, preaching in
 the Universalist Church.

This is all the secondary information I mentioned before.  There is still another that lists all the sons, but says the grandfather was George Stroud of Sherborn.  My only point was that it would be good to have DNA to back up all this secondary information.

I did find one deed that puts John in Madison County, so that is one bit of a primary source.

Well, if you are looking for bullet-proof Stroud genealogy in post Rev. War NY state, you are likely never going to find it. The fire in Albany destroyed most NY state records for that era, and another fire that burned the Stroud house down in Willsboro, NY destroyed much of the personal family records.

The Gowdy Genealogy was written when Ira was still alive, so I give it more credit than being secondary. I give more credit to the NY history data as well, but that can be contradictory, as seen in Hudson-Mohawk Genealogical and Family Memoirs that lists John Stroud Jr as the son of George. I have many copies of deeds and documents from the Stamford/Clarksburg area, some of which show John listed as Jr., and hense his father was not a George, but a John Sr. There are many conflicting views on my line of Strouds, and even with a line proved by DNA through N. B. Storud to William of Natick, there remain persistant genealogies linking N. B. and his father Charles T. Stroud to Barnard Stroud, Daniel Stroud, and other original emigrant Strouds. Geneaological disinformation pervades this line.

I do not know of any living male descendants of my particular Stroud line, and hence I cannot offer the DNA proof as you would like to have it. Nor is there any source of bullet-proof documented evidence for several key generations in my Stroud line. I have requested copies of the mysterious Stroud Bible with the entries of the second family of John Stroud Sr. with the widow Abigail (Taylor) Bates, but those requests have gone unanswered. I have convinced myself of the lineage given the evidence that I have uncovered, but it is not proof positive. I do not do genealogy to join societies or the like, nor for religous reasons to seal them for eternity. I collect my ancestors for their stories and to see how I got to be where I am today from a former generation perspective. As such, I do not have to have immutable evidence for my building own personal family history. I can live with the holes and gaps in my genealogy data. 'If it quacks like a duck, it is probably a duck' is my basic genealogy premise. My other premise is that you have to take genealogy with a rather large shovel full of salt.

My husband, Jeffrey Dane Stroud, has Stroud on both his great grandparents. His great grandfather, Rodom Jefferson Stroud and Rachel Armita Williams both descend from William Stroud and Margaret Rose. How would I show that? Rachel is the grand daughter of Merrit Stroud and Prudence L Gatewood. Rodom "Jeff" Stroud is the grandson of John Stroud and Rosamond Rosie Green (which is Merrit's parents) :/

That looks good.  We are posting the direct male line for the Y-DNA surname project, so that is the one I will post on the Patriarchs page.  I'm away from the computer that has my Patriarch file, so it will be a few days before I can post your line.

I hope your husband or one of his relatives would consider having his Y-DNA tested.  If he has already tested at another company, the project would be able to use those results.
