Hi Friends,

My purpose with this Y 37 is to find my roots before and until my ggg ancestor ( 6 generations back ) Mathias Berg born ca 1725 and dead 1780 in Tallinn ( Reval ) Estonia. As far as we know he was officer in the Tsarrussian Empire as many baltic german/swedish people.( Uniform and sword was still in family 1915, tsar Peter III?s yacht "Siebenbuergen" was 3 generations in family until about 1850 ). The germans and swedes were "free" at those days, whereas the estonians in common were serves... ?Many notes in family tradition says that he was somehow related to the von Berg family in Livland ( Estonia / Latvia ), also we still have may personal resemblances ! Bad enough an Y 37 with Count Reinhard von Berg ( Canada ) now showed that we most probably don?t have a common male ancestor, still there are many possibilities that Mathias Bergs mother or grandmother etc might have been a Berg ( and that he used this as family name when he settled and married outside Tallinn after banned from military service after some calamities around the throne 1762 ?) or that Mathias and some of the von Berg family members in those days had a common maternal ancestor. Sofar we have not found any documents where we can find his origin ! ?Any information about these circumstances are most appreciated, please contact me with any notes that could bring more info about this matter !

Hi -

I was wondering if anyone had located any direct descendants of Johann Joseph Bergman of Berks County, PA.  He was one of the Hessian Soliders during the American Revolution.  I am a direct descendant of his.  His great-grandson changed his name to Burkman.

Thank you,

Chris Smithson

We don't have results yet for a male descendant of the person at the top of this tree. Hopefully we can get him tested and get a nice Y-result all the way back to 1675.
His branch splits off. Instead I will list the branch that I am directly descended from (I'm not a direct male line heir so I stop it at the point the y-line changes to a different line).

Note that surnames did not exist for native folk (due to being kept as slaves/serfs by the Baltic Germans and later also by the laws of the greater Russian empire in addition) until early-mid 1800s so some are listed without a surname and those born before then did not have a surname until they took one on after the date they were both allowed and had to take one on so although they are listed with a surname here they did not have one at birth.

Also note that I'm using the old partly-Germanized spelling and forms (where they chopped off the Latvian endings in many cases, i.e. when there is no 's' or "is" at the end of male names and surnames and no 'e' or 'a' at the end of female names and female form surnames, although some of the Mari/Marris forms here for female names were unusual and wouldn't fit the standard 'e' and 'a' pattern anyway and appear to have some Estonian/Finnish convention influence perhaps) in the old church records for most of these.

It's actually probably that all of the males were not only born in Valmiera, Latvia but on the exact same farm other than for the last one on the full descent direct male heir list (and a slight chance the first few might have been born elsewhere).

Thoms b.1675; Unknown (but was listed going to church a few times in Valmiera, Latvia); Masche b. 1676

Jahn b. ?; Most likely Valmiera, Latvia; Marris b. ?

Mahrz Bergman b. 1756; Valmiera, Latvia; Mari Bergman (unrelated line of Bergman) b. 1757

Jehkabs Bergman b. 1792; Valmiera, Latvia; Mari Pihlmann b. 1793

Dahwe Bergman b. 1820; Valmiera, Latvia; Anne Wikman b. 1826

Martins Bergmanis b. 1862; Valmiera, Latvia; Pauline Selma Lilienthal b. 1870

and actually to extend it to a direct male heir follow the above but then after Dahwe 1820 go:

Peter Bergman b. 1850; Valmiera, Latvia; Annistine Nuerst b. 1876

Eitens Bergmanis b. 1909; Valmiera, Latvia; Johanna Anna Leite b. 1897
