Welcome to the Vick DNA Project
The Vick DNA Project is focused on reconstructing the family trees of both men and women with Vick ancestry and in connecting those with Vick ancestry with their cousins. Our project supports traditional methods used in VICK family history research and genealogy. We also want project members with variants of the VICK surname.
There is a page for Y-DNA results and another page with a matrix of autosomal DNA matching. In each case the results are grouped by relatedness, with the largest number all descended from Joseph Vick, who was almost certainly from England (but his birth place is unproven). We would like to have many more descendants of other VICK lines join our project.
DNA testing is a relatively new tool for genealogists. We are interested in YDNA, the DNA that is passed solely from father to son virtually unchanged for many, many generations, as well as autosomal DNA which both men and women inherit from their parents. Through comparing test results we can gain insights into how we are related to each other and to other families, and break down brick walls in our peigrees. In the process we also find out about our family long before recorded history and how our ancestors migrated across the world thousands of years ago.
While we do not have a page for mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). Mitochondrial DNA is passed solely from mothers to their children - men do not pass on mtDNA. Where mtDNA can helps us understand a line we are very much interested in it. It is difficult, however, to make family connections with mtDNA because it changes at a rate that often is not conducive to use in family history and matrilineal records can be much harder to find before 1850.
The name Vick appears to be predominately English but also, among others, German, Nordic, French, and Scotish. There are many variants of the name. Many are listed on the Family Tree DNA Vick project page.
If you think you are interested in joining our project please contact the administrators at the email addresses below before ordering a test so that we help you to choose the right DNA test for the genealogical question you have.
James Larry Vick, who goes by Larry, and Lannes Ray Vick, who goes by Ray, are the primary administrators of the project with Jason Vick, doing most of the site web work. We have our own particular interests in this project but we are more than willing to include information from and ideas about any member's line. Larry is very active in the Yahoo group listed below where you will find lots of additional information on Vick.
We also have an extensive list of links to various sites of interest to genealogists in general and Vick family members in particular. Here are some:
