Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way.

The Vanfossen Family Project is started to:

1. Help researchers on common or related families work together to find their common heritage  (See the Patriarch  Page).   Our families are collected here under the name Vanfossen, which is derived from the Dutch form van Vossen.   Today there are many variations of that Vanfossen name.   My own Fox branch came about in an ad hoc manner soon after the Revolutionary War.  Another branch formally changed its name to Vanfaussien in the West Virginia courts.  Others appear to have drifted into alternate spellings in the course of the westward migration across America.  We want this project to help bring these lines together, showing, where possible, how we share a common heritage.

2. Identify the DNA of our Vanfossen families and compile them and their various branches into distinct genetic lineages through DNA matches.  The name variations we know about so far are:  - Van Vossen  - Van Fossen  - Vanfossen  - Van Fossan  - Vanfossan  - Van Fosson  - Vanfosson  - Van Faussien  - Vanfaussien  - Fox.
