Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists !

  • These tests help genealogists verify their paternal (father's father's father's ...) ancestry.
  • Surname DNA information can be very powerful when combined with traditional paper trails.

The following Surnames are currently included in this Project:

  • SHENTON
  • Other possible variations and/or alternative spellings (e.g., SHANTON, SHINTON, SHENTONE) may be included, especially if no specific Surname Project for those surnames is established.  Please contact the Shenton Project Administrator.

This Family Project is established to:

  1. Help researchers on common or related families to work together to find their common heritage.
  2. Identify how the participant's families are connected, both genetically and through conventional paper trails.
  3. Identify and confirm genetic Lineages of ancestral families.
  4. Ultimately, catalog pedigrees and genetic connections of all known Project families.

The SHENTON surname seems to go back quite a ways in England, possibly to the time of William the Conquerer. Published research on the web shows three parallel lines going back to 1700, with known descendants identified in most counties of England (concentrated in Staffordshire, Leicestershire, Lancashire, Cheshire and Derbyshire), many states in the U.S., and Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Africa. Additionally, there is an unconnected line in Maryland, USA, dating from the mid-1600's. An initial objective of the Project - subject to modification as new members join - is to determine if the various parallel lines actually have common ancestors, and to assist currently unconnected Shentons in determining to which of the current or new lines they belong. The Project will, hopefully, proceed in concert with other conventional genealogical efforts to develop and document the Shenton heritage.

DNA testing is not a substitute for the usual research work of genealogy, but is definitely a useful adjunct to your other efforts. For that reason. the Shenton Y-DNA Surname Project was initiated to support and complement two existing research efforts on Shentons:

  • Scott Shenton's traditional 'tree' efforts, published on the web as A SHENTON Family Site, which currently supports the four lines mentioned above.
  • Malcolm Street's effort (with Scott as collaborator), published on the web as SHENTON - One Name Study, which is attempting to 'do' all the Shenton households in all the 1841 - 1901 UK Censuses.
