Patriarch Page

Below you will find the patriarchs of the Jean Family DNA Project, by Earliest Ancestor and Line Leader who we can currently identify through DNA. We hope to eventually locate descendants of each known family and to arrange their participation in the DNA project.

Jean / Gean / Jaynes Lineage I

First – we must discuss the fact that the DNA test used in family research is on the y-chromosome, which only males carry.  Once a group of DNA test results are known, lines can be formed based upon mutations, and a model DNA profile should be established.  In other words, originally there was a male who had this “model dna profile”.  Who he was, where he lived, etc is unknown at this point, and we will probably never know.  The goal of DNA profiling is to take the lines as far back as possible, and hopefully join them together.  But, what was the original DNA profile?  Again, we will probably never know that for sure.  All we can do is look at what we do know and compare the different tests.  Then we attempt to group these lines with as few small differences (due to mutations) as possible.  For researchers of this family it is becoming abundantly clear that the Jean/Jane line with the fewest mutations (at this point) is the line of Western Peyton of Floyd Co., KY.  It does not mean that the Jean/Janes were Peyton’s, it just means that his y-chromosome appears to have mutated the least, and therefore we will use him as our model DNA profile.

Lineage I families have been found predominantly in North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee.  Many of these families did leave those areas and migrate to GA, AL, MS, and AR.  Known spellings of this surname include: Gean, Geane, Geanes, Jean, Jeanes, Jeans, Jane, Janes, Jayne, and Jaynes.

Jean Lineage III

Lineage III families descend from a Jean family of France, which migrated to Canada in the mid-1600's.  From Mark Godon a descendant: "...four [JEAN] brothers... immigrated to Canada…. [Three of the brothers came over in 1669 – Elie (or Helie), Viven and Pierra.  They sailed from LaRochelle, France on the 150 ton Pot de Beurre, (Butter Pot) captained by Frederick Booterpot.  The youngest brother Guillaume did not accompany his older brothers at this time.  He arrived in Quebec ten years later in 1679.]  Two of the JEAN brothers took "dit" names. This was a fairly common practice under which the French would change their surname. The family would often keep the dit reference for a few generations then drop it in favor of the new surname. In the case of the four brothers, two kept the name JEAN and two adopted dit names. Vivien JEAN changed his name to Vivien JEAN dit VIEN. Elie JEAN changed his name to Elie JEAN dit GODON. I am a direct descendant of Elie JEAN dit GODON. To confuse matters a bit there was another Vivien JEAN that immigrated to Canada a few years earlier. This Vivien JEAN was married to Elisabeth DROUET. He also changed his surname to JEAN dit VIEN or VIENS. His son Pierre seems to use VIENS almost exclusively."
