Hull Lineage Groups

There are 228 participants in the Hull DNA project. (This includes 14 who have not returned their kits to FTDNA.) There are 188 donors included in the Y DNA chart. There are 65 in Haplogroup I1; 6 in Haplogroup I2; 108 in Haplogroup R1b; 3 in Haplogroup R1a; 5 in Haplogroup E; 1 in Haplogroup J and 1 in Haplogroup Q. The largest Lineage Group is I-1 with 55 donors; The largest R1b group is now R1b-3 with 21 donors and R1b-3 is next with 19 donors.

The DNA results defines the group. This is a basic outline of the lineages groups, primarily listing dates and places of the earliest ancestors of the donors. This is an attempt to describe the Hull Y-DNA results with words more than numbers. Both the Y-DNA chart and this page will sometimes list the branch of a family instead of the earliest known ancestor. For example, the first 30 donors identify four great-grandsons of Richard Hull d 1599, namely Josias and Cornelius Hull, sons of George Hull and Tristram and Benjamin Hull, sons of The Rev. Joseph Hull. With other lineage groups, sometimes the earliest known ancestor is a John Hull and nothing else is known about him. In those cases, the earliest ancestor listed on the Y-DNA chart is one with either an estimated birth or death year or the name of spouse.

Haplogroup I

Lineage I-1   Crewkerne Hulls

Lineage "I-1" is the largest group of donors in the Hull DNA project with a common Haplotype (the set of markers which define a lineage). This group is referred to as the Crewkerne Hull Group, even though all may not descend from Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England.

30 donors have traced their ancestor back to the two early American immigrants, George and the Rev. Joseph Hull. Their earliest known ancestor is Richard Hull and his second wife Alice; the will of Richard Hull was proved 6 Jun 1599 in Crewkerne, co. Somerset, England. His son was Thomas "the Younger" Hull who married Joan(e) Peson on 11 Jan 1572/73 in Crewkerne. They are the parents of George and the Rev. Joseph Hull.

George Hull married Thamzen Michell on 27 Aug 1614 in Crewkerne. DNA donors descend from sons Josias and Cornelius. Josias Hull was baptized on 10 Nov 1616 in Crewkerne; he married Elizabeth Loomis. Lt. Cornelius Hull Sr. was baptized 14 Apr 1628 in Crewkerne; he married Rebecca Jones.

The Rev. Joseph Hull was baptized 25 Apr 1596 in Crewkerne. The Rev. Joseph Hull had two wives. DNA donors descend from sons Tristram and Benjamin. Son Tristram descends from the first wife whose name is unknown. Tristram was born ca. 1624, probably in co. Devon in England and married Blanche. Son Benjamin descends from the second wife Agnes. Benjamin Hull was baptized on 24 Mar 1638/39 in Plymouth Co., MA and married Rachel York(e).

Three donors in this group probably do not trace their ancestors back to those two American immigrants. Their earliest known ancestors are in England in the late 1700's.

• Joseph Hull was born 18 May 1779 Leigh, Yetminster, co. Dorset, ENG, married Mary Andrews. His son Joseph Hull was born 21 Feb 1791, Chetnole, co. Dorset, ENG, married Mary Crocker.
• Thomas William Hull was born ca. 1785 and married Johannah. His son Thomas William Hull was born 19 Nov 1811 in Depford, London, England.

About 20 donors in this group suspect that they descend from George or the Rev. Joseph Hull, but have been unable to prove their lineage that far back. They descend from:

• Benjamin Hull was born 27 Aug 1740, died 11 Oct 1832 in Lincoln Co., NC; he married Sarah Hutcheson/Hutchinson
• George Hull Sr. whose will was probated on 14 Sep 1816 in Mendham Twp., Morris Co., NJ; his wife was Elizabeth. Their son Solomon Hull was born 7 Nov 1758 in Mendham, Morris Co., NJ and married Sarah.
• Levi Hull was born in Shippensburg, Cumberland Co., PA and married Jane Fry.
• Cornelius Hull was born ca. 1744, died in Great Berkshire, Berkshire Co., MA; he married Thankful Root
• Elisha Hull was born ca. 1795 in NY; he married Elizabeth Dow/Daw in Oct 1823. Their son Malancthon Hull who was born in Jul 1830 in NY and married Angeline Harrington.
• Stephen Hull died ca. 1849; he married Rebecca Alger; they resided in Genesee Co., NY. Son Philo and Rebecca are in Ionia Co., MI in 1850.
• Benjamin Hull was born ca. 1800/1810 possibly in NY; he died in late 1849 or 1850. His wife was Mary A. They resided in LA.
• Wakeman Hull, was born ca. 1807, NY; he married Eliza L.
• James T. Hull was born ca. 1843 in VA, died 16 Apr 1905 in Emmet Co., IA. He married Mary E. Sutton on 25 Jan 1866 in DeWitt Co., IL. He was the son of Stephen Hull and Catharine Utta and the grandson of Benjamin Hull and Jemima.

This project also accepts donors whose Y-DNA results match very closely with Hull donors. The ancestors in this lineage group are:

• John Branch was born ca. 1740 in England.
• James H. Simmons was born ca. 1848 in Jackson, AL and died 1880. He married Nancy Jane Yates. Son died in Texas.
• Joseph Seamands, died ca. 1729 in Richmond Co., VA. Son Ephraim was born ca. 1708 and 1718 and died ca. 1801 Albemarle Co., VA.
• Ivar Arneson Slede til Sandvik 1431-1512 Kvinnhera (which I am translating: Ivar Arneson Slede was born 1431 in Norway).

Lineage I-2   German Peter Thomas Hohl Line     [formerly Lineage 8]

Peter Thomas Hohl was born ca. 1713, Palatinate, Germany. He married his second wife Susanna Margaretha Dieffenbach on 25 Nov 1750 in Lancaster Co., PA. His will was proven 19 Mar 1776 in Augusta Co., VA (now Highland Co., VA).

Lineage I-3      

This group consists of two donors, but no known common ancestor. The earliest ancestor of one resided in England and Canada. The earliest ancestor of the other is from Ohio.

• George E. Hull was born ca. 1795 in Sheffield, England. He married Elizabeth Peach. They moved to Twillingate, Newfoundland, Canada.
• H. Melvin Hull was born ca. 1850 in Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH; he married Amelia Christian on 7 Sep 1875 in Cuyahoga Co., OH

Lineage I-4   Irish Hulls; Ruddock Group     

These four donors all tested with 67 markers and the distance from each other only ranges from 1 to 3. This lineage group includes two with the Hull surname and two with Ruddock (or variant) surname. Two share a common Hull ancestor.

• John Hull was baptized in 1794 in Dromore, Co. Down, N. Ireland; he married Margaret Reilly. Son William was baptized Feb 1833 in Tullyherron, Waringstown, Co. Down, N. Ireland; he married Berlina Crozier.
• Robert Ruddock was born ca. 1670.
• James Ruddock was married in 1810.

Haplogroup R1b

Lineage R1b-1   German Hulls      [formerly Lineage 10]

This is the largest group of R1b matching donors. There is a variety of earliest known ancestors including immigrants to America from two locations in Germany. Other donors have not identified the immigrant ancestor.

The subgroup designated as possibly in this group have markers that are in the gray area of closeness. This may indicate a common ancestor that is several generations back in time from the donors whose results are closer.

• German Johann Nicklas/Nickel Holl immigrated with his sons Abraham and Andreas in 1738 from Liebsthal, Pfalz, Germany to Philadelphia, PA and settled in Lancaster Co., PA. This Johann Nickel Holl married Anna Margaretha. Abraham Holl was born 20 May 1714 in Germany, married Maria Catherine Stentz on 7 May 1745 in Lancaster Co., PA and died 5 Nov 1788 in Berwick Twp. York Co., PA. Andreas Holl was born in July 1718 and married Maria Catherine Lehman; they resided in Frederick Co., MD.
• Jacob Hull was born about 1750-1755, possibly in NJ; he married Elizabeth Souder(s). They resided in Frederick Co., MD and Franklin Co., PA. Their sons included Abraham and John. Abraham Hull was born 21 Jul 1795 in MD and married Mary Miller. John was born ca. 1778 in MD. John first married Catherine Beard and later married Eleanor Holbert. He died in 1868 in Washington Co., MD.
• Henry Hull was born ca. 1798-1800 (possibly in PA); he married Catharine Donnenwirth (Mrs. Catharine King) and resided in Stark, Medina, and Hancock Cos., OH.
• Jacob Hull, was born ca. 1805 and died in 1881. He married Hannah Summany and resided in Westmoreland Co., PA.

Possibly in group R1b-1

• (Johann/Hans) Nicholas/Nickel Holl/Hohl immigrated in 1750 with his son Francis (Franz Philipp) Holl and possibly with his son (Johann) Peter Holl. Hans Nickel Holl was born 17 Mar 1705, Merxheim, Rheinland, Prussia, where he married Catharina Elisabeth Bauss on 27 Apr. He resided in Strasburg, Lancaster Co., PA and died before 28 Jun 1785 when his land there was sold by his heirs. His son Francis (Franz Philipp) Holl was born 30 Dec 1733 in Merxheim. He married Maria Agnes Klinglin on 27 Mar 1758 in Lancaster Co., PA; he later married Margaret. His will was proved in Feb 1808 in Augusta Co., VA. (Johann) Peter Holl was born 2 Jan 1744 in Merxheim; he married first Maria Elizabeth and married secondly Hannah. Peter died May 1819 in Lancaster Co., PA. These three immigrants are not the earliest known ancestor for their descendants. This Hans Nickel Holl is the grandson of Hans Matthei [Hannss Matthes] Holl who was born in 1653 in Merxheim, Rheinland, Prussia where he married Elisabeth Maria Ursula Lang on 26 Jan 1672/73.

Lineage R1b-2

The earliest known ancestors from this group are Richard, Jeremiah/Jere and Arion/Aaron Hull.

• Richard Hull was born 3 Dec 1599 (probably in England). His wife is unknown. He resided in New Haven Co., CT. His will was written on 21 Aug 1662 and probated 6 Jan 1662/3 in New Haven Co., CT. His son Dr. John Hull was baptized on 24 May 1640 in New Haven Co., CT, married Mary (possibly Beach) and he died on 6 Dec 1711.
• Jeremiah (Jere) Hull was born ca. 1751 in Wallingford, New Haven Co., CT. He served during the Revolutionary War in the 1st Massachusetts Regiment. He married 23 July 1781 at Lenox, Berkshire Co., MA, to Tamer Stone. He later resided in Bennington Co., VT and Essex Co., NJ. He died 05 Oct 1832 at Caldwell, Essex Co., NJ. His son Jeremiah Hull was born ca. 1795 in Bennington Co., VT; he married Jane McClennon and died in May 1867 in Essex Co., NJ.
• Arion (or possibly Aaron) Hull was born in CT and married Elizabeth (or Mary Elizabeth) Fairchild. Their only child was William H. Hull who was born on 2 May 1862 in Hunter Village, Greene Co., NY and married Nora Lynch.

Lineage R1b-3

There are a number of earliest known ancestors for this group but no known connection between them. The dates and locations of these earliest ancestors vary. Hopefully as more donors match this group, more clues will be discovered to break through these brick walls and discover links between the earliest known ancestors.

It is difficult to determine the "common" marker values (group "Haplotype") because of the wide variation within this lineage group. This group has been divided into sections of donors based on marker values. It is probable that the common ancestor for each section is more recent than the common ancestor for the entire lineage group. For readers not interested in the marker comparison, just assume the donors within a section are more closely related (and you can bypass the following discussion of marker values).

This discussion only compares the first 37 markers. Seven donors have tested 67 markers. Of those values (markers 38-67), all are identical except for one value. (Differences are called mutations.)

This group is first divided based on the value of the marker "DYS 576" (seen easily as the yellow vertical line in this section of the Y-DNA chart). The donors in the first two sections have a marker value of 17 and the donors in the last three sections have a marker value of 18. It is possible that this mutation occurred at one time and all the descendants with 17 are in one branch of the family and all descendants with 18 are in the other branch of this family. However, it is also possible that this mutation occurred multiple times in multiple branches of this family.

The first section consists of six donors with five earliest known ancestors. These donors have matching 37 markers. The second section consists of the four remaining donors with "DYS 576" value of 17. The third section consists of four donors with "DYS 576" value of 18 who have identical 37 marker values; three of these four have the same earliest known ancestor. The fourth group consists of four donors with "DYS 576" value of 18 who have relatively close marker values. The final section consists of three donors whose marker values differ the most from the rest of this lineage group.

The first section consists of six donors with five earliest known ancestors. These donors have matching 37 markers. The earliest known ancestors for the first section are:

• Henry Hull was born 2 Feb 1789, possibly in Washington Co., PA. He married Catherine Snider on 30 Jan 1810 in Trumbull Co., OH. He resided in Wayne Co., OH by 1820 where he died 24 Nov 1863.
• William Franklin Hull was born ca. 1808/1820 in GA. He married Margaret Jane Harvey. He married 31 Dec 1866 in Hernando Co., FL to Catherine Collins. He resided in Columbia, Volusia, and Orange Cos., FL. He died 27 Nov 1898, Orange Co, FL. A marker on his tombstone states he was born 1 Jan 1808 and states "Pvt US Army Indian Wars". However, his age was given as 30 in the 1850 census and 70 in 1880, both implying he was born ca. 1819/1820.
• John H. Hull was born ca. 1812/1813 in MD. He married Margaret Carr Templin on 17 Oct 1837 in Ross Co., OH. They resided in Pike Co., IL in 1850 and in Adams Co, IL in 1870. His father was Samuel Hull who was born 17?? in MD. John descends from his unknown first wife. He later married Sophia Smith and resided in Ross Co., OH.
• David Reed Hull was born 21 Apr 1812 in SC. He married Mary "Polly" Connor. His first son was born in AL; the remaining children were born in MS. He resided in Winston Co., MS where he died on 28 Apr 1889. Family tradition states that his father James Hull was born on a ship en route to America; the ship docked at Mobile, AL and the family settled in Pickens Co., AL. His birth place is listed as SC in 1850-1870 census; MS in 1880; some sources state he was born in AL.
• Joseph Hull was born ca. 1859 in Ireland. He resided with his brother in 1880 in West Newbury, Essex Co., MA. Joseph married Lizzie Floretta Orne and he died 13 May 1887 in West Newbury, Essex Co., MA. In the 1900 census, brother William states that he immigrated in 1869. William and Joseph are possibly the sons of Isaac and Margaret Hull of Ireland.

The second section represents four donors. The earliest known ancestors from this section are:

• Rev. Beauchamp J. Hull was born 1820 in (probably Somerset Co.) MD. He married Clarissa Goslee on 11 May 1841 in Somerset Co., MD. He resided in Somerset Co., MD, Kanawha Co., VA (now WV), Bourbon Co., KY and Orange Co., FL. He died in 1877 and is buried in Apopka, Orange Co., FL.
• John Hull was born about 1750 in VA.
• Hugh Hull was born in 1810 in Ireland.
• John Hull was born in 1724. He is an ancestor of a John Hull who was born in 1805 in Ireland and who married Sarah Boyes on 3 Aug 1843 in Ireland.

The third section consists of four donors who have identical 37 marker values with "DYS 576" value of 18. Three of these four descend from the first ancestor listed:

• Richard Hull was born ca. 1750 in co. Antrim, IRE and died ca. 1818 in Dungiven, co. Derry, IRE. His son Thomas Hull was born ca. 1776, Mulkera, co. Derry, IRE and died 19 Aug 1836 in Dungiven, co. Derry, IRE; he married ca. 1798 Elizabeth Miller. Thomas Hull, son of Thomas Hull and Elizabeth Miller was born 5 Nov 1805 in Co. Derry, IRE. He moved ca. 1840-1841 to Ayrshire, Scotland. He sailed for America in 1855 and settled in what was to become Idaho and Utah by 1860 and died 2 Feb 1886.
• John Hull was born 18 Nov 1848. He was born or grew up in Glasgow, Scotland. He married Mary Alice Butler on 16 Sep 1871 in Victoria, Australia. He died 27 Jul 1919 in Victoria, Australia. His death information stated that his parents were John Hull and Margaret Jane Quigley.

The fourth section consists of four donors with similar marker values (with "DYS 576" value of 18). The earliest known ancestors from this section are:

• John Hull was born ca. 1745/1748. He married Rebecca. He died ca. 1809 in Ohio Co., WV. His son John was born 17 Apr 1782 in Washington Co., PA. He married Hannah Newkirk ca. 1805. Most of John and Hannah's children were born in Washington Co., PA, but their last two were born in Adams Co., OH. John died 22 Nov 1865 in Adams Co., OH. (John is in Tiffin Township, Adams Co., OH 1820-1850 census and in Oliver Township, Adams Co., OH in 1860).
• Richard Hull was born 1826 and married Priscilla Corin. This line is from Lancashire, England.
• James John Hull married Selena Boyle. Their son James Hull was born on 12 Mar 1837 in Ireland. He married Elizabeth Armour in 1874 in Belfast, IRE.
• James Hoole was born ca. 1790 in Holle, Chester, England. (In 1790 Hoole was a village outside the city; it is now a suburb of Chester.) He married Jane Cotterell in 1810 in London, England. The family immigrated in 1820 to the Eastern Cape, South Africa. They had 3 sons and 4 daughters. James Hoole died in 1845 in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa.

The markers of the donors in the fifth section are not close in comparison with most of the donors in the first four sections, but are close enough to one or two donors to be grouped with this Lineage Group. This implies that the distance to a common ancestor with the other sections is probably more distant. There are three donors in this section and two descend from the first ancestor listed below. The earliest known ancestors from this section are:

• Jacob Hull was born 4 Jul 1776 in MD. He married first Francis "Fanny" Robinson on 22 Aug 1805 in Monongalia Co., VA (now WV). He married Catharine Snyder on 4 Sep 1815 in Monongalia Co., VA (now WV) and later married Hannah Ruble. He lived in Harrison (now Taylor) Co., VA (now WV). He died ca. 1872 in Knottsville, Taylor Co., WV. (One donor descends from the first wife and another donor descends from the second wife.)
• John Hull, born ca. 1784/1785 (probably in Liverpool, co. Lancashire, ENG). He married Elizabeth Taylor on 17 Oct 1811 in London, ENG. He immigrated to NY by 1817. Son Thomas was born 28 Apr 1818 in NYC, NY; William and John were born in 1820 and 1822 in Boston, Suffolk Co., MA; Charles was born 9 Aug 1825 in LA. John and Elizabeth were in Gibson Co., IN by 1850 where he died ca. 1869. John's father may be William Hull who married Elizabeth Edward. John had an older brother Thomas Hull who never married and resided with nephew Thomas in 1850 in Gibson Co., IN; the census states Thomas was born in Wales.

Lineage R1b-4

This group consists of two donors whose markers which match 24/25. There is a third donor who is listed as possibly Lineage R1b-4; he matches 23/25 with one of the above donors, but 22/25 with the other. (As more donors are added to this group, or if these donors upgrade to more markers, it will determine whether this should be one group or two.).

• Richard Hull was baptized 21 Sep 1740 in Portsmouth, Rockingham Co., NH and married Hannah Chesley. He is the son of Richard Hull, born ca. 1710 who married Patience (whose surname is thought to be Mains).
• Henry Hull was born ca. 1807, NH. He married Eunice Stubbs.

Possibly in group R1b-4

• William Hull was born 13 Apr 1800 in VA and married Sarah Martin. He died 9 Jan 1875 in Malta, Barton Co., MO.

Lineage R1b-5

This group consists of two donors who descend from Isaac Holl/Hull. As in the previous group, these two are closely matched (24/25). A third donor (who descends from Frances Hull) matches one 23/25 and the other 22/25. This third donor is classified as possibly Lineage R1b-5.

• Isaac was born in Germany and immigrated in 1737; his will was proved 24 Dec 1784 in York Co., PA. His sons include Samuel and Jacob. Samuel Hull was born 28 Dec 1749 and married Elizabeth Funk; they resided in Earl Twp., Lancaster Co., PA & Bedford Co., PA. Jacob Hull was born ca. 1744 and married Anna Malawn on 11 Feb 1766 in York (now Adams) Co., PA; they resided in Warrington Twp., York Co., PA.

Possibly in group R1b-5

• Francis Hull married Mary Woods; he died in 1722 in Brampton, Huntingdonshire, England.

Lineage R1b-6

This group of 13 donors has the closest match of markers of any group this size. Five donors have identical matches of 67 Y DNA markers. One donor who tested 37 markers matches 37/37 with these five donors. Their set of marker values has been designated as the group haplotype (the numbers displayed in the top row in the Y-Chart). These match no further than 35/37 with all other donors in the group. The descendant of Solomon Hull has the most distant matches in the group, yet he is a distance of 3 to 5 (of 37 markers) with all others in the group.

• Samuel Hull was born ca. 1743 and died in 1818 in Sussex Co., NJ. He is the earliest ancestor in the group. Donors descend from two sons, Andrew and Isaac. Andrew Hull was born ca. 1775 and married Jane VanSickle. Samuel's son Isaac Hull died in 1837 in Sussex Co., NJ; Isaac's wife was Mary. Isaac's son John Hull was born ca. 1810 and died 6 Feb 1882 in Monroe Co., MI; he married Susan Mott in Sussex Co., NJ.
• Samuel Hull was born ca. 1756; he married Grace Lytton.
• John Hull was born between 1750 and 1760, died before probate inventory dated 20 Nov 1834 in Greenup Co., KY; he married Rebecca. Son John Hull was born 3 May 1819 in Greenup Co., KY; he died 29 Jul 1906 in Warrick Co., IN, where he married Mary Agnes Phillips on 2 Apr 1840.
• Thomas Hull was born ca. 1761. He resided in Wheatfield and St. Clair Townships in Westmoreland (now Indiana) Co., PA where he died in 1849; he married Elizabeth "Betsie" Cox.
• Solomon Hull was born 12 Oct 1791 in PA. He first married Rachel. He married Elizabeth Wright in 1848 in Henry Co., IN. He resided in Hancock Co., IN in 1850 and he later resided with married children in Huntington Co., IN, where he died 23 Feb 1871.
• Abraham Johnson Hull was born 9 Jul 1798 in Fayette Co., PA. In 1819 he moved from PA to Butler Co., OH where he married Cynthia Stevens on 13 Apr 1821. He married Mrs. Margaret (Joyce) Walker in 1845 in Butler Co., OH. He moved to Bartholomew Co., IN in 1847 where he died 9 May 1877.
• Samuel Hull was born 14 May 1809 in PA (perhaps Fayette Co.) and moved to Butler Co., OH in 1819. He married Susannah Ruth or Rooth. He remained in Butler Co., OH where he died 24 Aug 1866.
• John Quincy Hull was born Aug 1826 probably in VA/WV. On 15 May 1845 in Athens Co., OH, he married Lorinda Davis. He resided in Canaan and Lodi Townships in Athens Co., OH. He died in 1905 in Athens Co., OH. The 1850 census states that his parents were born in PA.
• George W. Hull was born ca. 1837 in NY, died 27 Aug 1863 in Chemung Co., NY; he was buried in Elmira NY. He married Carrie C. Benedict (who later married Archaleus Wycoff/Wyckoff).
• John Hull was born 8 Jul 1842 in IN or OH. He married Sarah Underhill on 13 May 1869 in Tippecanoe Co., IN; they were married in a double ceremony along with Elizabeth Hull and Noah Underhill. John Hull died 19 Jun 1915 in Carroll Co., IN.

It is possible that Abraham, Samuel (born 1809) and Solomon Hull may be sons of an Isaac Hull who served in the Rev. War.

Possibly Lineage R1b-7 was disbanded due to divergent results after upgrade

Lineage R1b-8     

The Hull DNA project includes donors with other surnames whose results closely match Hull donors. This lineage group includes a Williams donor with identical 67 marker results with the descendant of William Hull. The third donor in this group tested 37 markers and only differs one from the other two donors. The two Hull donors descend from two sons of Isaac Hull.

• Isaac Hull was born 03 Jul 1790 and died in 1852 in Clarion Co., PA. He resided in Madison Township in Clarion Co., PA. He married first Margaret McClatchey.
  • William Hull was born 25 Apr 1820 in PA and died 26 Dec 1897. He married Adaline Anderson.
  • John Wamsley Hull was born 12 Jun 1810 in Armstrong Co., PA and died 24 Dec 1889. He married Margaret Hillis. They resided in Madison Township in Clarion Co., PA.
• Albert Williams was born 07 Apr 1826 in Williamsport, PA and he died on 18 Apr 1900 in Waukesha, WI. His death certificate states his father was Henry Williams.

Lineage R1b-9 Moses Hull     

This lineage group was the greatest surprise of the Hull DNA project. Before DNA testing, Moses Hull (who was born ca. 1729 and died ca. June 1778 in Rowan Co, NC) and his son Moses Hull (who was born ca. 1751 and died ca. 1840) were known to be descendants of the Rev. Joseph Hull. The question was merely how they descended from Joseph. Since there are descendants from three sons of Moses Hull (b. ca. 1751), DNA clearly indicates that this Moses is not a biological direct male descendant of the Rev. Joseph Hull. What is not known is whether this is a totally different line or whether there was a Non-Paternal event in this family.

The earliest ancestors in this lineage group may descend from this second Moses Hull. Josephus (born ca. 1772), Jesse (born ca. 1773) and Moses (born ca. 1774) are thought to be sons of this second Moses. Daniel (born ca. 1797), Jesse (born ca. 1808) and David (born ca. 1811) are thought to be sons of the third Moses.

There is a strong paper trail linking Samuel Hull of Hunterdon Co., NJ to Moses to Moses to Josephus. The undated will of Samuel Hull of Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ (proved in 1761) mentioned wife Margaret and left land to eldest son Moses. The will of Margaret Hull (written in 1768, proved in 1769) also mentioned son Moses (who was executor). Moses Hull died in 1778 in Rowan Co., NC leaving a will which left land in Anwell Twp. to his sons Moses and Joseph Hull. In 1792, Moses Hull of Wilkes Co., NC, gave a Power of Attorney to his son Josephus to settle affairs and sell land in Amwell Twp., NJ.

These are the Earliest Known Ancestors (EKA) of the six donors in this Lineage Group:

• Josephus Hull was born ca. 1772; he married Elizabeth Brown. They resided in Middlesex Co., NJ, Anson Co., NC, and Wayne Co., KY. His son Jonathan B. Hull was born ca. 1800 in Middlesex Co., NJ; he married Nancy Agnes Beaty in 1825 in Cumberland Co., KY. Jonathan and Nancy resided in Cumberland Co., KY and in Fentress, Jackson and Overton Cos., TN. Jonathan Hull died 31 Jan 1883 in Overton Co., TN. (This line has only been tested with 12 markers.)
• Jesse Hull was born ca. 1771-1773. He married Rebecca (perhaps Staley) and later married Jane Asheninhurst. His son Allen Brock Hull was born 17 Aug 1811 in Fentress Co., TN and married Serena Maynard. Allen and Serena resided in Overton and Fentress Cos., TN. (Allen and Serena were grandparents of former Secretary of State Cordell Hull.)
• Daniel Hull was born 6 Mar 1797. About 1820, he married Elizabeth. Their son Elijah Charles Hull was born 15 Jan 1820 in Cumberland Co., KY; he married on 2 Nov 1845 in Greene Co., IL Mary Jane Ferguson. Both families resided in Morgan Co., IL and Johnson Co., TX. Widow Elizabeth resided with Elijah and family in 1870 in Carroll Co., AR. Elijah was in Erath Co., TX in 1880 where he died 30 Oct 1890.
• Jesse Hull was born in 1808 in TN; he married Elizabeth. Their son Dr. John Milton Hull was born in 1834 in TN; he married Drucilla Griffith on 21 Sep 1854 in Montgomery Co., IL. John resided with his parents in 1850 in Montgomery Co., IL. John and his family later resided in Morgan Co., MO and Carroll Co., AR; he died in Cherokee Co. KS. (This line has only been tested with 12 and 25 markers.)
• David Hull was born ca. 1811 in KY. He married Sarah Elizabeth Crouch about 1831 in Overton Co., TN. They resided in Greene Co. IL, Johnson Co., TX, Yell Co., AR and McLennan Co., TX. He died ca. 1890 in Eastland Co., TX.

There is uncertainty about the early lineages of donors in this group. Each of these may not be the sons of the second or third Moses Hull. However, the DNA indicates that they are closely related. There are six donors from these five lines whose DNA markers match closely. However, two donors tested only 12 markers and one donor tested only 25 markers. Of these six donors, there is only one who differs (by only one marker) in the first 25 markers. Of the three donors who have tested 67 markers, the maximum difference is only a distance of 3 meaning these donors have a common ancestor. One donor who matched this group descends from Daniel Hull, born 1797. One donor who does not match this group also has a paper trail to Daniel Hull, born 1797. More donors are desired from all of these lines, but especially from Daniel Hull.

Note: The donors in this lineage group do not descend from the Rev. Joseph Hull of Crewkerne, England (whose descendants are in Lineage Group I-1). Note: Descendants of this Daniel Hull do not match the descendant of Daniel Christie Hull, son of Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie (who is in Lineage Group R1b-14).

Lineage Group R1b-10      

The two donors in this lineage group both tested with 37 markers and are a distance of 3.

• John Hull was born in 1775 in Granville District, NC and died ca. Dec 1852 in Guilford Co., NC (although buried in Forsyth Co., NC).
• William Hull was born 28 Nov 1750, St. Bartholomew's Parish, Colleton Co., SC. He died before Nov 1796, St. Augustine, St. Johns Co., FL. He married Elizabeth Maxey.

Lineage Group R1b-11 Green Hull of NC/(W)VA      

Both donors descend from Green Hull

• Green Hull was born about 1788 in Surry Co., NC (or perhaps in VA) and he died in 1855; he married Martha "Patsey" Daily (or Daly) on 11 Sep 1804 in Lunenburg Co., VA. One donor is descended from his son Gregory Johnson Hull who was born 03 Apr 1810 in VA and died 18 Sep 1880 in Catlettsburg, Boyd Co., KY; he married Sarah Ann Greenwood on 14 Jan 1835 in Surry Co., NC.

Lineage Group R1b-12      

Both donors descend from Thomas Hull and son Francis Marion Hull.

• Thomas Hull was born about 07 Nov 1779 (in NC or VA) and married Winnifred Evans on 17 Dec 1801 in Putnam Co., GA. Francis Marion Hull was born 1 May 1821 in Putnam Co., GA, and he died on 12 Aug 1883 in Leon Co., TX. He married first Sarah Dovie Davis about 1841 in GA.

Lineage R1b-13 Daniel Hull of KY

This is a lineage group whose ancestor was thought to be the same as an ancestor in lineage group R1b-9. Both donors in this group descend from Daniel Hull and his son James Monroe Hull. More donors are needed who descend from Daniel born about 1797 to determine why there is a conflict between the DNA results and the paper genealogies. The lineage groups are defined by matching marker results.

• Daniel Hull was born about 1797 perhaps in KY and married Elizabeth. Son James Monroe Hull was born 12 May 1828 in TN or KY and married Ruth Fanning.

Lineage Group R1b-14 MD and SC Hulls      

The Hull Family Association Journal, Vol. 20. No. 2, Summer 2010, features a article on Joseph Hull and Keziah Christie Hull Family Records.

• Joseph Hull was born about 1756 in MD and married Keziah Christie on (24 or 28) Nov 1793 in Brunswick or Dinwiddie Co., VA. Joseph Hull is probably the son of Jacob Hull who is the son of Daniel Hull and Mary Quinney. From the Cecil Monthly Meeting records (MD), Jacob was born on the 12th day, 1st month [March], 1729.
• Enoch Hull who was born about 1800 in St. Lukes Parish, Beauford Co., SC and married Elizabeth.

Possibly Lineage R1b-15 John and James Hall

These two donors match exactly with 25 markers, but there is a distance of 6 with 37 markers since one marker has a difference of 4.

• John Hall was born 8 Dec 1799 in Northumberland, ENG and married Ann Taylor; his parents were John Hall and Katharine Richardson of Northumberland, ENG.
• James Hall was born in 1866.

Haplogroup E

Lineage Group E-1 Rev. Hope Hull      

All donors in this group descend from the Rev. Hope Hull.

• Rev. Hope Hull was born 13 Mar 1763, perhaps in Worcester Co., MD; and he died 04 Oct 1818. He married Anna Wingfield.

• John Hull was born 1792 in PA and he died after 1880. He married Hannah Bechtol on 1 Dec 1817 in Clinton Co., PA. He is probably the son of Adam Hull who died about 1800 in PA.
• Jesse Hull was born 12 Mar 1783 in MD and died 10 Mar 1841 in Marion Co., OH. He married (second) Anna Porter on 24 Sep 1816 in Talbot Co., MD.
• James T. Hull was born 29 Aug 1817 in Pendleton Co., VA and he died on 12 Jul 1905 in WV. He married Mahala Armstrong.
• John Summerfield Hull was born 01 Aug 1823 in Norwich, New London Co., CT; his second wife was Alexina Woods.
• Ira Leroy Phillip Hull was born 27 Jan 1827 in OH. He married Martha J. Barnett.
• Wilhelm Hohl was born in 27 Jul 1844, Ölbronn, Neckarkreis, Württemberg, Germany and married Dorothea Fink on 22 Jan 1871 in Stuttgart, Württemberg, Germany.
• John Thomas Hull married Sarah Elizabeth Mitchell. His son John Willard Hull was born in 1874 in Jefferson Co., OH.

Changes in Lineage Group R1b-1:

Donor descended from (Johann/Hans) Nicholas/Nickel Holl/Hohl immigrated in 1750 upgraded to 67 markers. Markers are close enough to indicate common ancestor with descendants of German Johann Nicklas/Nickel Holl who immigrated in 1738 from Liebsthal, Pfalz, Germany to PA.

Changes in Lineage Group R1b-3:

This group has been divided into five sections. A new earliest known ancestor has been added to the first section. This is the first identified immigrant in this section.
