For those who are new to genetic (DNA) genealogy testing, I should mention that according to one of FTDNA’s competitor’s method of counting markers, FTDNA’s 37-marker test by the competitor’s count of markers refers to the test as a “41-marker test.” FTDNA does the standard test and reports markers 464e, 464f, 464g, and DYS19b. Although FTDNA tests these four markers, it is very rare that individuals have results for them. Therefore, by FTDNA’s conservative counting method, its competitor's “33-marker test” is actually a “29-marker test.” We mention this to make sure that you understand the difference between these tests and are able to compare “apples to apples.”
