Description of Patriarch Lines in Surname Project
(Genealogical background for DNA groupings)

A DNA Surname Project uses DNA to enhance good genealogical work by providing additional clues. This page is focused on the genealogical work on the families and surnames in this project.

Gnn represents a tested, distinct DNA line with an identified Earliest Known Ancestor as listed. To avoid issues, all lines are identified with the last ancestor BEFORE any claimed link to the Rishford Manor Hore's.  Sometimes the line is also identified by a more recent but better known ancestor.

Xnn represents a genealogical researched line without any testers to date.  The Rishford Manor Hore line started in 1330 is also listed here, for completeness.  As is William le Hore of Wexford, Ireland in the 1100's.

Those who genetic test but do not match to an existing family, and are not sure of their heritage, are left ungrouped and not depicted here.

G00: Charles Hoare b.1586 Gloucester, England; m. Joanna Hinksman; wife d. 1661 Baintree, Massachusetts

One of two early, large New England families in the early days of settling North America. Distinguished with many early luminaries such as governor of Massachusetts, first president of Harvard college, Senators, United States Attorney General, and such. Charles actually died in Gloucester and it is his widow Joanna who traveled with her younger children to the new world.

Should be noted that Lyon Hoard's research indicates that Hezekiah is 5 generations removed from the Rishford Manor, Chagford family.  Robert Hore, b1440 is the last of Hezekiah's ancestors to be born at Rishford Manor.  After that oldest son William stays at the manor and younger son Thomas moves to Axminster to start Hezekiah's line.  This connection was investigated thoroughly by UK based genealogists XXXX and Ken Smallbone under funding from Lyon Hoard and his son Jose.

  • Long story attached to John Hore b.1552 profile that is part of tree fragment. Believe contributed by Nancy Orr.
Note: Those in this group trace to a John Hore which was still in Rishford Manor.  John's grandson William is the one who sold the manor.  But the DNA of this group and Hezekiah are very distinct. Both are likely not tied to the Hore's of Risford Manor. So which one is has yet to be determined.

X01: Henry Hoare, d.1654 in Walton (Ayesbury), Buckingham, England

Includes Hoare families in Middlesex, Surrey, Wilts and Essex.  The main source of knowledge on the family, Sir Richard Colt Hoare, is from Stourhead (Manor) in Wilts; now a National Trust site. Includes the Rishford Manor Hore's of Devon in first four pages but states not sure if linked or not. His earliest ancestor is really Henry Hoare of Walton d.1654 and suspects this may be the brother of William who sold the Rishford Manor in 1630. Only clue is they seem to share the coat of arms. This is the same link made by genealogists researching Hezekiah's line to link Thomas Hore of Axminster to Robert Hore of Rishford Manor.

X02: Edward Hoare, d.1654 in County Cork, Ireland

Claims link to William Hore who sold the Risford Manor in Devon in 1630. Says several of William's issues proceeded onto Ireland, mostly in service of military and thus found many family lines there. Proceeds to include the Devon family info and much of the Hoare banking family (1/2 the book; much just directly copied from Sir Richard Colt Hoare's book it appears). Thus claims to link the Wiltshire Hoare's to the Devon Hore family as well; which Sir Richard Colt Hoare only conjectured. Includes Charles Hoare of Gloucester in an appendix; info he obtained from George Frisbee Hoare in the North America. Circumstantially believes them to be the same family; through some use of similar coats of arm (unsubstantiated heraldry).

X06: Richard Hore, d.1380 in Risford Manor, Devon, England

Probably one of the most regurgitated family lines. Reprinted in most family history books of this surname but often with very little real proof of connection from their researched family line to this one. Hence, many claims and disinformation out there. One goal of this project would be to recreate or verify previously published claims (or disclaim them) and use DNA evidence to help support the weak evidence or guess of a link to this family. Would be wonderful to more strongly tie in the claims of the full story of the family as given below.

The Hore line of Rishford Manor in the County of Devon existed from roughly 1330 to 1630. The line was founded with the marriage of Robert Hore to the heiress Alicia, daughter of Rowland de Risford.  It ended with the sale of the Manor by the last, eldest son William Hore in 1630.  This is one of the few lines, of this surname, researched earlier than 1600 and before the existence of many records.  There is mixed information available about heraldry associated with this line and many of the families claim a link via the use of a similar heraldic seal or emblem.

The Hore line of Rishford Manor is reported to be a branch of a non-eldest son from the Hore line in Wexford, Western Ireland.  Additional research reports the Hore line of Wessex ties back to a William le Hore of Pembroke, Wales who went with Strongbow in the early 1200's to conquer Ireland for the King of England and then stayed when rewarded lands for the effort.  William le Hore is said to be one of the early Norman conquerors; possibly coming from Auray in Brittany, France if one description of the surname origin is to be believed.

X07: William le Hore, d.1200abt in Wexford, Ireland

The supposed source of the Risford Manor Hore line starting around 1330, and the source of stories of William le Hore traveling from Wales with the Knight Strongbow. Likely the start of most Hore lines in Ireland.

Other

The below lines are likely not related to others in this surname project but included here as confusion comes into play. Descendants changed their names to ones used in the lines above.  Also, some tested and believing to be in these lines are matching to groups above.  So maybe they are tied in to the same English lines?

--: John Hord (Hoard, Hore) and Jane Jeane of Virginia, USA

While this should clearly be a distinct group and description, DNA testing of two individuals places them in two very different groups already existing.  The G00: Charles Hoare and the G03: John Hore.  Further investigation and testing needs to occur to determine how to classify this known "Hord" line of Virginia.  None of the members of the FTDNA Hord Family project have joined our project nor have responded to inquiries.  But we have offline placed them among our groups.

Born Surrey, part of Southeast England in 1664/1679 and arrived Virginia by 1702 but likely in 1685 as an indentured servant. Not believed related into the surnames looked at here but often confused and cited along with these families. Added into DNA project to prove definitively. Also seen as Hoard and Hore sometimes. Supposedly related to an Alan Hord, arrived VA 1650 and Elias Hord, arrived VA in 1654. From Surrey, England to Shady Grove, Essex County, VA around 1685.

--: John Hurd b.~1640 Connecticut

There is confusion here with a John Hurd in Connecticut born 1640 who is from the same area in Southeast England. Variations on their name are Heard, Horde, Hourd, Hoord, Hird, Herd, and Hord and thus very closely overlapping with names here. The project is not considered expanded into this surname unless DNA testing begins to show the surnames are truly related.
