Description of Patriarch Lines in Surname Project
(Genealogical background for DNA groupings)

Work on this surname project started to try and distinguish the English origins of two early New England families (Charles Hoar from Gloucester and Hezekiah Hoar from Chagsford, Devon).  Then to begin to distinguish these families from other lines that all seem to claim lineage from the Hore line of Risford/Rushford near Chagsford, Devonshire in England.  Most often noted is John Hore b.1554 of Cornwal.  Much is written on various Hore lines pre-1600 in England (with earlier histories back into Ireland and then Wales).  The DNA of the lines is appearing quite distinct so there are clearly multiple lines.  Disambiguating these lines and the documents will be aided by the DNA testing and genealogical work documented here.  This page is dedicated to the genealogical work on the surnames.

Mostly English lines but that claim (loosely) linkage back to the same Devon Hore's as the North American lines of Hezekiah Hoar, Charles Hoare, and English line of John Hore above.  Yet to figure out how to place them.

  • Hoare, Edward, Some account of the early history and genealogy, with pedigrees from 1330, unbroken to the present time, of the families of Hore and Hoare, 1883, A.R. Smith, London (Archive.org (external link))
    • Claims to tie in Hore lines of Devon. Research source of many others pre-emigration study on these lines.  No mention of Hezekiah as focused on English descent.  Some mention inaccuracies in work.
  • Hoare, Sir Richard Colt, Pedigrees and memoirs of the families of Hore, of Rushford, co. Devon; Hoare of Walton, co. Bucks; Hoare, of London, co. Middlesex; Hoare, of Mitcham, co. Surrey; Hoare, of Stourton, co. Wilts.; Hoare, of Barn-Elms, co. Surrey; Hoare, of Boreham, Essex, 1819, Bath, England (Stourton)  (see WorldCat (external link) for 7 copies in various libraries in UK, Australia and Sweden). Scanned Copy (external link) and 2-Sided, 8.5x11 now available (thanks to Roz and Randy).

These lines below likely not related but included here as confusion comes into play as descendents changed the names to ones used in the lines above.

--: John Hord (Hoard, Hore) and Jane Jeane of Virginia, USA

While this should clearly be a distinct group and description, DNA testing of two individuals places them in two very different groups already existing.  The G00: Charles Hoar and the G03: John Hore.  Further investigation and testing needs to occur to determine how to classify this known "Hord" line of Virginia.  None of the members of the FTDNA Hord Family project have joined our project nor have responded to inquiries.  But we have offline placed split them among our other groups.

Born Surrey, part of Southeast England in 1664/1679 and arrived Virginia by 1702 but likely in 1685 as an indentured servant. Not believed related into the surnames looked at here but often confused and cited along with these families. Added into DNA project to prove definitively. Also seen as Hoard and Hore sometimes. Supposedly related to an Alan Hord, arrived VA 1650 and Elias Hord, arrived VA in 1654. From Surrey, England to Shady Grove, Essex County, VA around 1685.

--: John Hurd b.~1640 Connecticut

There is confusion here with a John Hurd in Connecticut born 1640 who is from the same area in Southeast England. Variations on their name are Heard, Horde, Hourd, Hoord, Hird, Herd, and Hord and thus very closely overlapping with names here. The project is not considered expanded into this surname unless DNA testing begins to show the surnames are truly related.
