See Y DNA: The Role of Surnames on the HELP page
The FRAME DNA PROJECT was established to:
- Help researchers from related families work together to find their shared heritage.
- To assist Project members, the private Framedna Discussion Group at Yahoo has been established for this purpose.
- Identify whether or not all Frame families descend from a single ancient progenitor.
- It was discovered that Haplogroup I1 testers assigned to the groups Frame A and Frame B shared a common ancestor 1000+ years ago
- The Frame Group A members also shared a common Anglo-Norman ancestor who carried the RecLOH mutation YCAII a,b = 21,21. The specific individual has yet to be identified. Research is ongoing.
- No conclusions can yet be drawn for individuals in Haplogroup R1b1b2 surnamed Frame, DuFrane and Franey. To date there are only single results for each name in Haplogroup R1b1b2.
- Establish whether or not those with the variant surnames included in the Project share an ancient history with the family of FRAME.
- To date, testers with the surname FRAIM have proven to be related to the family of FRAME (See Results Page)
- DNA analysis has proven that testers with the surname FRAME in Group A (see Results Page) are closely related to the family of Hugh de Port, Companion of the Conqueror. DNA revealed a close kinship with testers surnamed St. John descended from Adam de Port. William, son of Adam de Port, adopted the surname of St. John (See Ysearch ID's FSMFS and C8Z39). 'In 1166 the under-tenants of Adam de Port of Mapledurwell included Walter del Fresne one fee, Ralf del Fresne three fees, and Thomas del Fresne one fee, all of the old feoffment; and also Alvred de Fresne a third of a fee of the new feoffment [Red Bk. Exch., pp.279-80]. Le Fresne is c. 5km west of Port-en-Bessin, cant. Trevieres, Calvados, Normandy.' [Loyd, Anglo-Norman Families, p.44]' This result supports historical research which had indicated that the surname FRAME was synonymous with the French surname FRESNE, anciently Fraxinus, Fraxino, Fraxineto, Fraisneto etc. Most surname dictionaries classify Fresne and its variants as topographical - signifying 'Dweller by Ash Trees'.
- Use genetic testing to resolve the ambiguity surrounding the etymology of the FRAME surname. (See update above)
- Confirm kinship where it is suspected and documentation is unavailable. (This has proven beneficial to Project members. See Discussion & Patriarch Pages)
- Help to validate or eliminate suspect lines. This will become more effective as additional men participate in the Project.
Participating in the FRAME DNA PROJECT provides:
- Our Y-DNA profile (haplotype) which is very close and sometimes identical to our earliest known direct paternal line ancestor.
- Our "deep" ancestry (haplogroup), which identifies our paternal ancestor's prehistoric origins.
- A sense of camaraderie, which is particularly strong for those who share a genetic ancestry.
- Stimulation to family research and renewed sharing of information.
- A wider sense of identity and relationship as we are given the opportunity to connect with our previously unknown cousins.
- A chance to compare our known ancestry with new DNA cousins of the same surname, and also those with surname variants.
- Our genetic matches with those who do not share our common surname.
- A clearer understanding of our ancestry - both recent and ancient - particularly where records have been lost.
