‘Within the DNA is written not only our histories as individuals, but the whole history of the human race. It is the traveller from an antique land who lives within us all.’

The following commentary on DNA testing was written by Dick Eastman and appeared in Ancestry Daily News on 3 January 2001:

'As we gain more knowledge about genetics and as more genetic "maps" are created, and also as more powerful computers and online databases become available, I predict that genetic profiling will become commonplace. If all of our relatives, including very distant cousins, have DNA samples made and recorded, future computers and databases will be able to map our relationships in detail. By matching the millions of bits of information together, we should be able to someday establish a persons ancestry with great precision. Someday we will accept genetic maps in lieu of pedigree charts'

Dick wrote the article in the earliest days of 'Genetic Genealogy' and at the time he may have been gazing far into the future - but his prophetic words were  on the mark! In just a few short years, great inroads have already been made.

DNA is the hereditary material in humans and almost all other organisms. It is the carrier of our genetic information – the blueprint of what we become - and is passed down from generation to generation. Since the year 2000, DNA testing for genealogy purposes has become the benchmark of the serious family historian. A well-researched and documented paper trail is essential and most aspire to achieve that, however paper trails can become flawed, deceptive or simply peter out to non-existence. Inevitably, one is faced with the dreaded ‘brick wall’. Surname Y-DNA testing is the newest and most powerful tool available to genealogists.  It will help verify paternal ancestry (father's father's father...) in a quick and easy way.  It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way. The Y-chromosome is passed from father to son relatively unchanged from generation to generation, so testing the Y-chromosome provides information about the direct male line. This method of genetic testing is able to validate existing paper records, help resolve issues with conflicting information and also accurately prove a relationship when kinship is suspected and records not found.  Provided those testing sign a release form, they are notified of their matches and are then able to contact ‘DNA cousins’ to focus research. We welcome all FRAME males from throughout the world to join us in this study. To participate in the FRAME DNA PROJECT, the tester must have the FRAME or variant surname by natural descent. Should a female wish to have a DNA test carried out on her family line, the simple cheek swab would need to be provided by a FRAME father, grandfather, brother, uncle or cousin.

The testing company chosen by the FRAME DNA PROJECT is FAMILY TREE DNA based in Houston, Texas. FAMILY TREE DNA was established  for performing genealogical DNA testing and analysis. Fees for DNA testing are comparitive with traditional family history research expenditure.

The FRAME DNA PROJECT was established to:

1. Identify the DNA of ancestor families and compile them and their lost branches into distinct genetic lineages through DNA matches (See the Results and Discussion pages)

2. Help researchers on common or related families work together to find their common heritage. (See the Results and Patriarch pages)

3. Identify which variant surnames are related.  (See Misc. page for 'The Search for the Origin of Frame ')

4. Attempt to identify the deep roots of all Frame families (See Misc. Page for 'The Search for the Origin of Frame ')

The Project is particularly interested in Y-DNA testing:

i. A direct male line descendant of the FREAME family of Gloucestershire, England with the FREAME (or var.) surname and a documented pedigree.

ii. A direct male line descendant of ROGER DE RAIMES (Companion of the Conqueror) with the RAIM / RAIMES / REYMES / RAMES / REAMES / REYNES / RAINES (or var.) surname and a documented pedigree.

iii. A direct male line descendant of Odo 'Radulphus' de FRAXINETO (Companion of the Conqueror), Geoffrey de FRAXINO / FRAXINETO (de Freyne) or  Fulk de FREIGNE of Ireland with the FREYNE or FRENCH surname and documented pedigree.

Limited sponsorship is available to suitable candidates. Please contact one of the administrators

Please Note:

We personally recommend testing the highest number of markers you can afford.

*The 37-marker Y-DNA test is the recommended entry level for the FRAME DNA PROJECT*

FRAME DNA PROJECT Administrators will require new members to submit a simple line of descent from earliest known ancestor.

  • 67 marker test $269
  • 37 marker test $189
  • 25 marker test is $148
  • 12 marker screening test is $99

Postage for kit: $2 in U.S. and $4 for international postage.
