Welcome to the Donovan DNA Project
This Project's website is now hosted at https://www.familytreedna.com/groups/donovan
Project Surnames Include:
Donovan Dunnavant Dunnivan
Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way.
According to The Surnames of Ireland by Edward MacLysaght (Sixth Edition published 1985 in Dublin), the Donovan surname derives from the Gaelic Ó Donnabháin and was originally of County Limerick, Ireland. They became a leading sept in south-west County Cork. The majority of Irish names beginning with Donn are derived from the adjective donn which translates to English as brown. The second part of the such names is usually speculative being often obsolete forenames.
The goal of the Donovan DNA Project is to identify the different branches of the Donovan/Dunnavant/Dunnivan families. For example, these families can be found in the middle of Tennessee as well as from Virginia through to Texas and beyond.
This DNA Project will:
1. Help researchers on common or related families work together to find their common heritage (See the Patriarch Page)
2. Identify the DNA of the ancestor families and compile them into distinct genetic lineages through DNA matches
