FTDNA announces 2014 Holiday Sale

Click here to find out how to add your pedigree or contact a pedigree provider.

The purpose of this page is to present the participants' Coursey/DeCoursey lineages, starting with the earliest known ancestor (EKA). The lineages are placed into groups as determined by the DNA results, in other words all the lineages in a group share a common ancestor (as yet unknown).

If they wish, the name and contact information of the person(s) researching the line is listed with each pedigree. If privacy is a concern participants may also remain anonymous.

It is very important that project members submit a lineage, as they are crucial to the success of the surname study, as well as a vital tool in enabling Coursey/DeCoursey researchers to make connections with each other.

Individuals who are seeking a male from a specific line or family to test may submit a lineage to administrator for posting on the Wanted! page.

In some cases females and males with no known male descendants have been included in the lineages for context. These individuals are in italics.

        • Francis Charles DeCoursey (b. 12 Sep 1885-Alma, Park, CO; d. 1967-KS) m. Catherine C. Cotter (1915-KS)
        • Edwin Joseph DeCoursey (b. 22 Mar 1887-Alma, Park, CO; d. 1936-California) m. Mary J. Pfaff/Poff (1913-KS)

      • James William DeCoursey II (b. 20 Jun 1862-McCamish Twp, Johnson, KS; d. 1915-Missouri) m2. Anna Thompson (1899-KS)
James Coursey emigrated from Ireland to southeastern Canada, probably in the 1820's. It is not known whether he and his wife Hannah emigrated together or met and married in Canada. They are known to have been living in Canada in 1827 and 1832 and in Maine in 1835. According to a family legend the family went from Maine to New Orleans and then to Chicago, spending a short time in each place before settling in northern Illinois. As no documentation has yet been found on the family prior to 1850, this story has not been substantiated. No documentation whatsoever has been found regarding James Coursey Sr. By 1850 Hannah had remarried and was living in Jo Daviess County, Illinois with her two daughters. Son James was in California seeking his fortune in the gold rush. Whether James Sr. died or left the family is not known. James and Hannah's son James William and his family settled in Leavenworth County, Kansas in the early 1860's. The family changed their surname from Coursey to De Coursey in the 1890's.

  • C-5 John COURCEY/DeCOURCEY (b. 10 Jul 1839 - County Cork, Ireland; d. 1922 - Massachusetts) m. Mary McCarthy (May 1859-Kilbrittain Parish, County Cork, Ireland)
    • Edward J. Courcey/DeCourcey (b. 1860 - Kilbrittain Parish, County Cork, Ireland, d. 1905 - Massachusetts) m. Mary O. Thurston (1882-MA)
    • John T. Courcey/DeCourcey (b. abt 1862 - Kilbrittain Parish, County Cork, Ireland; d. 1893 - Lynn, Essex, MA) m. Elizabeth T. Driscoll (m. 1886-NH)
      • John Jeremiah DeCourcey (28 May 1889 - Gloucester, Essex, MA; d. aft 1919)
    • Ellen Courcey (b. 22 Jun 1864 - Courceys Parish, County Cork, Ireland; d. aft Mar 1900-USA)
    • Daniel Joseph Courcey/DeCourcey (b. 5 Jun 1873 - Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts; d. abt 1926-USA?) m. Hannah T. Hurley (1899-MA)
    • Richard Courcey/DeCourcey (b. abt 1874 - Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts) m. Ellen F. Hennessy (1900-MA)
    • Patrick Courcey/DeCourcey (b. 5 Feb 1876 - Gloucester, Essex, Massachusetts; d. 1953-MA) m. Katherine J. Hurley (1902-MA)
John and Mary and their eldest children emigrated from County Cork Ireland to Gloucester Massachusetts in 1871. Their home in Gloucester stayed in the family until the 1980's. It appears that the family changed the spelling of their surname from "Courcey/Coursey" to "DeCourcey" in the late 1880's. No reason is known for the name change. Family lore indicates that John owned stone quarries in Gloucester and that most of John and Mary's sons worked at the quarries for at least a while as young men. This is suported by census records. Daniel and Patrick's wives (Hannah and Katherine Hurley) were sisters, the daughters of Richard Hurley and Elizabeth McCarthy of County Cork.

  • C-6 Michael DeCOURCY (b. bef 1819 - Ireland) m. Eliza? (bef 1835-Ireland)
    • Patrick Coursey/DeCourcy (b. ca 1834 - Ireland; d. 23 Nov 1897-Winchester, Middlesex, MA) m. Hanora Cronin (1859-MA)
      • Henry E. DeCourcy (b. 2 Jan 1871 - Winchester, Middlesex, Massachusetts; d. aft 1929) m. Jennie O'Donnell (m. 1900-Pawtucket, Rhode Island)
      • David Henry DeCourcy (b. 1872 - Winchester, Middlesex, Massachusetts; d. aft 1930) m. Anne E. Healey (1903-MA)
This line mainly uses the DeCourcy spelling in all US records from the 1850's on. Circumstantial evidence points to a possible link between Patrick and a John DeCourcy (b. abt 1828-Ireland) who married Hannah Reardon/Riordan abt 1850. Their family is found in Hillsborough County, New Hampshire from the 1850's to 1900's. Members of Patrick's family are found living with and near John's in the censuses. (Hillsborough County borders Massachusetts, the area where John's family lived is about 60 miles north of Winchester, MA.) Both Patrick's and John's parents' names were Michael and Elizabeth/Eliza. More research is necessary to confirm a connection. Descendants of John and Hannah are sought for DNA testing!

  • C-14 James COURCY (b. bef 1802-Ireland) m. Hanora (bef 1817-Ireland)
    • Richard Courcy (b. ca 1817-Ireland; d. 26 Apr 1867-Boston, Suffolk, Massachusetts) m. Mary Ann Downing/Downey (b. ca 1830-London, England; m. 1845-ME; d. 1867-Boston, MA)
      • John Courcy (b. ca 1846-Maine; d. aft Jul 1850)
      • Daniel E. Courcy (b. ca 1851-Maine; d. 1934-Maine) m. Hannah A. Delaney (b. ca 1857-Maine; m. ca 1873; d.1944)
        • Daniel Richard DeCourcy (b. 1880-Bangor, Penobscot, Maine; d. 1944-Maine) m. Leona Mary Beaulieu (b. 1897-Maine; m. 1920-Maine)
        • James Henry DeCourcy (b. 18 Mar 1883-Maine; d.1934)
        • C-14 Vincent DeCourcy (b. 1891-Bucksport, Hancock, ME; d. 1960-ME) m1. Alberta Mae Dunbar (b. ca 1896-Maine; m. 1917-Maine; d.1933-Maine)
      • James A. Courcey (b. ca 1856-Maine; d.betw 1926 and 1930) m1. Bridget Stanton (b. ca 1856-Ireland; m. 1877-ME; d. 1903-Bangor, ME), m2. Catherine E. Stanton (b. ca 1858-County Cork,Ireland; m. 1905-ME; d. 1914-ME), m3. Mary A. McKinnon (b. ca 1857-ME; m. 1915-ME)
It appears that Richard and Mary Ann, along with an infant son, died of small pox within weeks of each other in 1867. Son James, who was about 9 at the time, appears to then have been raised by a Daniel Courcey who was most likely Richard's brother or cousin. James consistently uses the Courcey spelling, while Daniel (b. 1851) favours the Courcy spelling and later added the "De".

Mary Emerson, m2. Rachel Clayton) of the Colonial Courseys of Maryland's Eastern Shore (see Group 4 below). Researchers of the Maryland Courseys, however, maintain that this is incorrect, and so far DNA testing confirms that these two Coursey families are NOT related.

The lines of participants C-9 and C-10 both have their earliest known origins in Edgefield District, South Carolina. It is likely that these lines have a common ancestor born in South Carolina. Researchers are working on trying to find the connection between these and other early Edgefield District Coursey lines.

There is a good chance that this line is closely connected to that of David COURSEY (b abt 1811 in Georgia or Tennessee) who married Elizabeth PAGE. They are found in Humphreys County, TN in the 1840 and 1850 censuses, and came to Marshall County, KY around 1855. They had many descendants. It would be very interesting if a descendant of David and Elizabeth would be willing to join the DNA project in order to test this hypothesis.

The earliest members of the mid 17th century Coursey family of the Eastern Shore of Maryland, included Henry [2], John [1], William [1], James [1], Katherine, and Jane Coursey. They apparently had their roots in southwestern Ireland, Kinsale and Ringrone, County Cork, on the Celtic Sea. However, their pre-11th century ancestor's home was surely in Normandy, France. The father of the above named people was Henry [1] Coursey, as documented in the 1661 will of his son John [1] Coursey of Maryland. Henry [1] Coursey allegedly died in Dublin, Ireland, on January 15, 1664. These Coursey family members (Henry [2], William [1], and John [1] and their sister Katherine) emigrated from Great Britain, probably Ireland, in 1649 to Maryland. Another sister Jane Coursey>Southcote remained in Ireland. Henry [2] Coursey of "Lord's Gift" plantation. Henry [2] Coursey died with a will in 1695 in Talbot County. The will indicates that his family name was spelled "Coursey", not DeCoursey or its variants. Henry [3] Coursey, son of Henry [2] Coursey and Mary married Elizabeth Desmyniers of Dublin, Ireland. The traditional spelling of the oldest Baronage in Ireland is DeCourcy and all of the Barons of Kinsale and Ringrone used this spelling. Most of the extensive lands in Kent, Talbot, and Queen Anne's County, Maryland, originally owned by the Coursey family descended to William [3] Coursey. He was the youngest of the three sons of Henry [3] Coursey and Elizabeth Desmyniers>Coursey [she of Dublin, Ireland] and the grandson of the famous Col. He (William [3]) was born in 1703 and died in 1769 in Queen Anne's County. His will named his surviving four children, all of whom lived and died in Queen Anne's County. Thus, this family's name was "Coursey" not "DeCoursey", as documented in the wills and land records of Talbot, Kent, and Queen Anne's County. The name DeCourcy or DeCoursey or its variants was not used in Maryland for this clan until after 1800 when Edward [1] Coursey, son of William [3] Coursey, recommended to his sons [Edward [2] Coursey and William Henry Coursey] that they use the French spelling "DeCourcy" or "DeCoursey" as used in Ireland. In the 1820 Maryland census for Queen Anne's County, Edward [1] Coursey was listed as "Edward DeCoursey." He is said to have stated that the change took place from the antipathy which sometimes existed between the subjects of Great Britain and France. Their intent was to efface the mark of their French ancestry.

Turning now to the Corse family of Colonial Maryland and Delaware. James Coursey, lawyer of Lincoln's Inn, London, England, apparently was the youngest brother of Henry [2], William [1], and John [1] Coursey, as documented in the will (1661) of John [1] Coursey and early Maryland land records. This James Coursey emigrated from London to Talbot County in about 1676. He joined the Society of Friends, gave up the lawyer business, became a farmer, and changed his name from Coursey to Corse in 1696, as demonstrated by my cousin Betty Craig many years ago. Subsequently James Coursey/Corse's grandson, William Corse, removed to Delaware in 1748. James Coursey/Corse is my (Glen A. Izett) ancestor. My recently deceased maternal uncle, Joseph Walters Corse, provided the Y-chromosome DNA sample for Group 4, C-15 of the DeCoursey DNA project internet site. James Coursey Corse's direct descendants (Group 4, C-15) of this site are as follows: John "Quaker" Corse; William "Delaware" Corse; John "Captain Jack" Corse of the Revolutionary War; James Alfred Corse; Arthur Corse; Alvin Herbert Corse and Joseph Walters Corse.
