The ultimate purpose of this page is to discuss our DNA results.
· So far we have seen three distinct Y-DNA patterns in the Boggs line. One belongs to the James L Boggs line of Kentucky. We have three participants that are descended from three of James L Boggs' sons which tends to verify this as the signature for this family even with only three participants. The second Y-DNA pattern belongs to all other Boggs participants who, in most cases, do not have a proven genealogical connection yet.
· Both Boggs line belong to Haplogroup R1b1b2.
We have a single Bogue participant whose DNA is different from the Boggs participants. We have found a Bogue that is not in the project that has close match to the James L Boggs line. More Bogue(s) participants are needed to evaluate this possible connection.
- One tradition among many Boggs's is that they had an ancestor Livingston(e) who changed his name to Boggs. This theory is explored at the Livingston/Maclea/Boggs DNA Surname Project. http://users.skynet.be/lancaster/Discussion%20Maclea.htm

Participating in a Surname DNA Project provides:
· A report on the participant's genetic DNA, which is very close (and sometimes identical) to the earliest known ancestor
· A classification of the participant's "deep" ancestry, which gives insight into the prehistoric origins of your surname ancestors
· A sense of camaraderie with all who participate in the Family Project, which is particularly strong for those who share a genetic ancestry
· Stimulation to family research and sharing of information
· A wider sense of identity and relationship, as we begin to realize how much we are a World Family.
· A chance to compare your genetic ancestry with those of the Surname and the Variant Spellings
· Locates the genetic matches that do not share your common surname.
· To date, there are over 70 surnames that match Boggs (Lineage I) at 12 markers. The most frequent matches are Harris with 8 and Jewett/Jewitt with 5. A match at 12 markers does not mean necessarily a recent common ancestor. It probably means a distant common ancestor before surnames became common.
· To date, there are over 150 surnames that match Boggs (lineage II) at 12 markers. The most frequent matches are Munro/Munroe/Monroe with 8, Pack with 6, Hines with 4, Carden with 4, Langford/Lankford with 4, Erwin with 3, and Moody with 3.
