Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way.  It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way. There are many different ways that DNA testing can be used for genealogical purposes.  Among them are: Validate or invalidate existing paper records
Confirm surname spelling change
Verify relationships with a family in the same region where you believe your ancestors lived
Verify relationships with others whom you believe you have a connection, but have hit a "brick wall" with the paper trail Once you have your results, you can look for matches with other members in the Padgett Surname DNA Project or others to determine if you share a common ancestor and the probability of how many generations in the past links you to the most recent common ancestor (MRCA). This Padgett Family DNA Project is intended to: 1. Help researchers on common or related families work together to find their common heritage  (See the Patriarch Page) 2. Identify the DNA of the ancestor families and compile them and their lost branches into distinct genetic lineages through DNA matches 3. Link individuals with variant spellings of the Padgett name to confirm or deny that the spellings are in fact from the same ancestral family. Useful Links
