Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way.

 Project Background:

The Motz Family Project welcomes all who are interested in working together to find their common heritage through sharing of information and DNA testing. This project is intended for those whose ancestry is from the Eastern United States (OH, VA, NY, PA, WA DC, etc.) and Europe.

Research at this point records the Y-DNA "Most Distant Known Ancestor" to be Johann Peter Motz b: 11 Jun 1794 in Rott, Alsace, France/Germany. His decedents (Balthasar, Philipp, and Jacob) settled in Long Island, NY.
Frank George Motz (born April 1st, 1881, College Point NY, married Alice Gordon Cummins, Falls Church, VA) moved to Ohio, and was the father of Walter (mine), Philip, Carlisle, Corbin, Frank, and Valinda (died as an infant).

How to Join the Motz DNA Project:
A. Never been tested? (Not with Family Tree DNA or Genographic Project):
Just click on the link labeled "Join this Project" in the upper left hand corner of this page. This will send you to a page where you can fill out the form to join and order a test kit. A basic 12 marker yDNA test costs $99; the 25 marker test costs $169; the 37 marker test costs $219. (These prices include a discount for joining the project.) There is a pull down menu at the bottom of the form with all the test options (including mt-DNA tests) and prices.

B. Tested with Family Tree DNA:
Go to your Family Tree DNA personal page and click on the blue icon labeled "Join." (This is next to your name and kit number, at the top of the page.) This will bring you to a page with the title "Group Join." Type "Motz" in the search engine and click to go to a page which will allow you to join the Motz DNA Project.

C. Tested with National Geographic (Genographic Project members):
Any one who has been tested by the Genographic Project can upload their results for free to Family Tree DNA and then join projects. To upload your results to Family Tree DNA, go to your Genographic Project "Results" page. At the bottom of that page it says "To learn more about your family history..." Click on that and follow the steps and your results will be added to Family Tree DNA's database. Then use the instructions above (for Current Family Tree DNA Customers), to join the Motz DNA Project. (Family Tree DNA customers may also upload their results to the Genographic Project. This will allow you to include your results in the five year international study. There is a $15 charge to upload either your yDNA or mtDNA results to the Genographic Project. Look for the "Genographic Project" tab on your Family Tree DNA personal page to upload your results.)
