How to provide your Pedigree

We will list all Lines by Earliest Assumed Ancestor.  We hope that eventually all families or lines participating in the Marsalis and variants DNA Project AND the recently added John Edeson/Edison project will be listed on this page.

Participation in the DNA Project is not a requirement for listing on this page, but we will indicate families who have a male representing them in the DNA Project.  If you are a Marsalis or variant through a maternal line we welcome your lineage posting at the Pedigree Forum and we will transfer the tree here.

Today, April 9, 2012 we welcome 2 descendants of John Edeson to our Marsalis/Marselis Project.

Thanks to DNA we have recently discovered a common ancestor for Marselis and Edeson. This is a history changing event as we eagerly await findings on the origins of JOHN EDESON, great grandfather of THOMA ALVA EDISON, America's own "Wizard of Menlo Park" (now Edison, NJ) and history's 4th most prolific inventoer.

Steve and Austin Edison  are direct descendants of John and Sarah Ogden Edeson and their sons SAMUEL and MOSES.

Austin descends from Samuel Ogden Edison as did Thomas Alva Edison.

Steve descends via paper trail from Moses Edison

More will be posted on this line as information is learned.

We welcome all who descend from John Edeson through a son or a daughter to post your pedigree - whether you test or not.

We now welcome a newly revealed cousin Herb MARSELAS. He is descended from John Edason MARSELAS born 1780, Maryland. Again thanks to DNA.

The  first  common ancestor for those surnamed MARSALIS/MARSELIS/MARCELIS/MERSELIS/MARSEILLES has been confirmed and verified by paper trail.

Pieter Marcelis/Marselis is the  known common ancestor. (Pieter is also recorded as Pieter Marcelisse and Pieter Marcelissen due to the Dutch patronymic naming system.)

Our Marsalis family began in the U. S. on May 9, 1661 with the arrival into New Amsterdam (New York) of the ship  DE BEVER
Passenger list : "Pieter Marcelis/ Marselis, from Beesd, with wife, 4 children, 13, 6, 4, and 2 years old and 2 servants"  --Holland Year Book 1902
According to the Holland Society Yearbook 1915 Pieter settled at Bergen, N.J. and died there with his burial recorded in the Bergen Dutch Church on September 4, 1682.

Within the last year there has been confirmation of Marcelis Pieters' origins in Beesd, Netherlands . The Message Boards for Marselis and Marsalis at Genforum and also at ancestry.com have much information.

1 Pieter Marcelis arrived 1661 at New Amsterdam,   with his wife ( Elizabeth LNU) and 4 children. He died  4 Sep 1682 Bergen, NJ.
2 Marselis Pieterse (as commonly written) b 1656, Netherlands, d 23 Oct 1747, NJ m  Pieterje Van de Voorst the daughter of Ide Cornelissen Van Voorst and Hilletje Jans.

( Marselis Pieterse and Pieterje Van Voorst had many children but only 2 known sons. Their son Pieter/Peter is the progenitor of the Preakness, Passaic CO, NJ lines of Merselis/Marselis.

Pieter/Peter had a son Edo , 1729 -1799, who married a cousin Adriantie Sip. Pieters line have been well documented by NJ historians.

Marcelis Pieterse's other son Ide , 1690- ca 1773,  is the progenitor of the Marsalis lines listed on this site. As mentioned there were many variant spellings of Marcelis/Marselis.

*About the name Ide/Edo: - a particularly old Frisian name that ran as a First Name through several Marselis branches and has no English equivalent. Several different spellings commonly found in early records are Ide/Iden/Idea/Ydes/Edo/Eden/Edea. It is pronounced as "E-da" or "E-duh"

CORNELIUS VAN VOORST, b.ca.1580 – d. either late 1638 or early 1639 probably at Ahasimus /Jersey City, married VROUWTJE IDES.

One of several children ,their son IDE CORNELISSEN VAN VOORST, b. ca. 1626 is said to be the “1st native white male to have been born in New Netherlands”, d. 12 -28 -1683. He married.10 -18 -1652 HILLETJE JANS, b.ca. 1630 and died 12 - 18- 1705.

IDE CORNELISSEN VAN VOORST & HILLETJE JANS had 6 known children

 A daughter PIETERJE VAN VOORST, bap. 10 – 9 – 1659, married 5 - 11 -1681 our

MARSELIS PIETERSE, a son of our earliest known ancestor the immigrant PIETER MARCELIS and ELIZABETH LNU

So "Ide" entered the Marcelis/Marselis family by Pieterje Van Voorst and Marselis Pieterse naming a son after her father Ide Cornelissen Van Voorst = #3 Ide/Iden Marselis, father of below #4 Harmanus/Harman/Harmon

Thus according to the Dutch patronymic system:

John Edeson's name could be interpreted as "John son of Edo/Ide/Iden )

3 Ide/Edo/Iden/Edea* Marselis born 1690 (Baptism NY Dutch Church)

   m Maritie Cornelis Coddemis/Cadmus April 23, 1713.

We current Marsalis/Edison researchers consider this marriage to be the possible connection - sons from this marriage.

The search continues but now known are a Marcellus Ideson and a  Cornelius Ideson/Edeson who were grandsons of Maritie Cornelis Cadmus' parents according to an estate paper.

Maritie Coddemis/Cadmus must have died. No other record has been found for her.

By July 6, 1718 "Ide Marselis and 2nd wife  Arriaentie Bras baptised their son "Harmanus"  Records at the Reformed Dutch Church, Hackensack, N.J.

(It is very probable that Ide Marselis married FIRST COUSINS. His two wives – (1) Marritie Cornelese Codemis/Cadmus and (2) Arriaentie Bras-- were the daughters of probable sisters Marytie KOEMANS and Geertie KOEMANs who were the probable daughters of Lucas Koemans and Arriaentie., his wife.)

Harmanus/Harman had brothers John, Peter, Henry and  sisters Mary M.Vermeule, Anna M. Covert and Catherine. All the brothers listed left wills.

Harman's own son Peter later wrote letters to "uncle" Vermeule. Cornelis Vermeule mentions "nephews Peter and John Marselis" in his historical writings. "Uncle Luke Covert" received power of attorney from "nephew" Peter.Marselis.

4 Harmanus/Harman Marselis baptized 6 July 1718 at Hackenscak Dutch Church, left a will Dec 1747, Piscataway, Middlesex NJ. He married Hannah Hutchins Marselis Robins/Robbins. She was born Dec 10, 1723 and died Sept 11, 1792 near Bound Brook, Somerset Co, NJ.  Hannah was the daughter of (Jacque) James Hutchins and Magdalene Pintard.  Hannah was the sister of Mississippi planter Anthony Hutchins, a founder of Natchez environs, and the sister of Thomas Hutchins, America's 1st and only Geogapher.

(After Harman's death at age 29 Hannah married William Robbins/Robins and had several more children. The known names from family letters are Charity, George, William Jr.)

#4 Harman and Hannah Marselis had 2 sons John (#5 below b. 1745) and Peter (born 1747 ) Peter's line later spelled the name as Marseilles and moved from NJ to Pennsylvania. Peter left a diary of his travels to the Southlands and many letters as well as 2 wills - one unexecuted. It is Peter's great granddaughter Lillie Marseilles Saxman, b 1866,  who first began Marselis/Marseilles family research about 1930.

5.John Marselis/Marseilles ( b Sept 13, 1745, d 22 Oct 1805 Somerset Co, NJ) mar. Prudence Last Name Unconfirmed - said to be Fitz Randolph. John and Prudence (Prudy) had sons  Peter Hutchins Marsalis., Ephraim H. Marsalis (died 1812, MS) and John H. Marsalis (died age 13, NJ) and a daughter Sarah/Sally.

6 Peter Hutchins Marsalis,  born ca 1775 prob. Bound Brook NJ , died July 1846 Amite Co, MS,  married Mary Magdalene Gordon in either NC or Georgia. The Marsalis Cemetery on the site of their former plantation in Amite County, MS is currently being restored in an effort led by Thomas Wixon (Marsalis descendant) and William (Bill) Marsalis and others. Several Marsalis descendants have contributed to the expenses. All the Marsalises who have tested are direct descendants of one of Peter (Hutchins) H.'s 6 sons. Peter Hutchins Marselis and his descendants adopted the variant MARSALIS spelling.

Peter Hutchins Marsalis and Mary Magdalene (Polly) Gordon are the common progenitors for all the mostly Southern lines surnamed Marsalis

LINEAGE 1 -SURNAME EDESON/EDISON

The earliest documented ancestor of the Edison family is JOHN EDESON/EDISON who married Sarah Ogden, the daughter of Samuel Ogden and Phebe Baldwin, on 10 October 1765 at Hannover Presbyterian Church in Morris Co, New Jersey.   Although family tradition has held that John was born in the Netherlands ca. 1727, recent research including DNA sampling, suggests that John is more likely to have been born in New Jersey after 1741.  To date, no definitive documentation has been discovered to confirm John’s birth or the births of his children.  The known children of John and Sarah Edison are Samuel, Adonijah, Mary, Thomas, Catharine, Sarah and Moses all born in New Jersey and Margaret, born in Nova Scotia.  The earliest documentary evidence of John Edeson/Edison is his marriage to Sarah Ogden.  However, considerable documentation survives surrounding his capture,  imprisonment and exile arising from his service as a United Empire Loyalist during the American Revolution.  John Edison is perhaps best known for his role in the American Revolution and as the Great-Grandfather of the American Inventor, Thomas Edison.
