(As of January 01, 2007, we have 12 participants)

The purpose of this Family DNA Project is to discover, by comparing our genealogical and genetic data:

  1. WHICH among us with these similar surname are related because we shared the same ancestors?
  2. WHEN in the past could our common ancestors have lived?
  3. WHERE in Europe did those ancestors come from?
  4. VALIDATE existing family tree research

Some of us know who our ancestors were by having created or inherited family trees on paper. Others among us are aware of our roots going back only as far as our parents or grandparents. By taking advantage of recently-affordable technology, however, we can now help clarify our roots by having scientists read the genetic record that half of us carry within us, in our Y-chromosome DNA.

Surname DNA testing is the newest tool available to genealogists. A simple swab of the mouth yields enough DNA (from our saliva) to extract our genetic roadmap. There are basically two types of DNA testing used in genealogical research. Y-Chromosome testing (Male) and Mitochondrial Testing (Female). These tests help genealogists verify their paternal ancestry (father's father) in a quick and easy way. It saves time, prevents mistakes, and provides invaluable data that can be obtained in no other way.
