Step 3: Pedigrees
Your Project Needs Your Pedigree

Share your pedigree with your Surname Project--

It may be the key to putting the puzzle together!

The pedigree as used in Surname DNA Projects and on the WorldFamilies.net project websites consists of a straight succession from the earliest known male ancestor in the participant’s surname line, continuing through the direct male ancestor in each generation, down to the present male participant.

Projects display the pedigrees on the project's Patriarchs' Page, along with the contact email and the kit number, so that project members and interested researchers can correlate test resultsi and pedigrees.  It is important that every member of the project provide a pedigree, even if he only knows a little, so that the project has all the pedigree information compiled.  Here is how a pedigree appears on the Patriarch Page:

John Doe, b 1790 MA, m Mary Brown - NC Doe [nmdoe AT happymail.com]
John Doe Jr. b 1820 Boston MA, m Jane Smith
John Doe III, b 1850 Philadelphia PA, m Sarah Jones
Thomas Doe, b 1880 Philadelphia PA, m Mary Williams
Samuel Doe, b 1910 VA, m Anne Taylor

How do I provide my pedigree for the project's Patriarchs' Page?

At the present time, there are two ways to make your pedigree available to the project administrator for posting on the Patriarch Page:

  1. By E-Mail

Traditionally, pedigrees have been submitted to WorldFamilies.net Projects via logging-in and posting on the project's Pedigree Forumi. Then the Project Administrator copies the pedigree from the forum and pastes it into the editing box of the Project's Patriarch page.  This system works very well for many projects.

However, as this has proved difficult for some, we also accept pedigrees sent to us by email. Carrie posts the pedigrees on the Patriarchs Pages for the projects which we administer.  She forwards these emails to the Project Administrators who are posting the pedigrees themselves.

   2.  On the Pedigree Forum

  • You must be logged in to post on the forum.

  • Go to your project's website and click the "Pedigree" tab in the menu bar.
  • Scroll to the last posting and click "Reply"
  • Be sure your posting includes

    • Name, birthdate, birthplace, spouse for each generation (direct male line). [If you are missing any piece of this information, you can substitute another bit of identifying information.]
