Mitochondrial DNA testing (mtDNA) is becoming
more popular.
Unlike Surname DNA testing, which gives you information only on your
paternal side (father's father), mtDNA gives you information on your
maternal side (mother's mother). Maternal ancestry is much more
difficult to research than the paternal side, since women traditionally change their
names upon marriage. mtDNA testing, however, can unlock many of these
dead ends to new research. A public database has been
established for mtDNA results, greatly increasing the probability that
you can find matches. It's called

We
are still in the early stages of unlocking knowledge about long-term
genetic ancestry (haplogroup), but tools are quickly becoming available
as empirical knowledge builds up. We plan to help you find and use
those tools as they are created. Do you want to know if your family
originally came from Scandinavia 2,000 years ago? The Zulu as opposed to
the Botswanan people? DNA testing is the way to find out. FTDNA
now provides a
mtDNA Results Tutorial, which is in Q&A format.
