Moon Family DNA Project

I have ordered the DNA kit for the Moon family DNA project and hope others will do the same.  Many of us have been blocked at Abraham Moon (1771-1847) for years.  I am trying this approach to try to break through that block and I encourage others to do so as well.

Is it correct that the DNA has to be Y...from a male family member?

Nancy:

My understanding is that the Y chromosone is the one that traces the paternal line.  Therefore, to trace the Moon name through the male line, we need males for the study.  I'm not sure about the other kinds of studies.  I'm not an expert in the DNA studies, just someone who is trying to break the block at Abraham Moon.  I should have stated in my posts that males would be needed to track the line back.  If you have a male who is willing to participate, that would be great.

I finally received my 12 marker DNA test results back and I had 188 exact matches.  However, I have no idea who any of these other people are so I am contacting as many of them as possible.  I will likely do an updated DNA test with a 25 or 37 marker test just to try to narrow some things down.  I am in the R1b Haplogroup and most of my ancestors came from England, Scotland, Ireland and Germany.  Much of which I knew already. 

I am still in the process of trying to figure out the meaning of my 12 marker test and it should be available on line now through this site.  If you can't find it and want the numbers, let me know and I will send it to you.

I already received one email from a guy who said we were exact matches and he comes from the John Moon and Mary Farmer line.  I did not think I came from that line.  Well, that is what this DNA is for.

I hope more males join in for the Y test.

I have found that my 12 marker test didn't really tell me very much.  Therefore, I have ordered the 37 marker test which is more expensive but I think worth it.  It will take about a week to get the kit and another 4-6 weeks to get the results.  In the mean time, I will continue to plug away.

Yeah 37 markers get better narrow exact surnames? ? ?my 25 markers were exact 152 markers.? so? ?my other DNA Hertiage 43 markers i recently got it? ? ?exact 3 markers out of 152 markers with 43 markers.? I like Family Tree DNA because there have more surnames project joined members than DNA Hertiage.?

Well, I received my test results today and the only match was a guy by the name of John Paul Dunn from North Carolina. However, the match was with a genetic distance of 3(?). From what I understand, somewhere in our recent past (200 years maybe), our families crossed. Does this name ring a bell to anyone connected with the southern Moons?

We really need for more of the male Moons to get involved before we can tell anything more definitive. Please join us.

Hi moonies. I just got my results from my 25 marker test and looking forward to sorting through this thing. I have posted my pedigree so you all can see where I'm coming from. Hope to hear from you.

I finally have a 37 marker match.  However, the match is with the Dunn name, not Moon.  As a matter of fact, of the 5 closest matches in my YDNA 37 marker test, all are Dunns!  As a result, I have had to go back and re-evaluate my entire genealogy research.  In addition, I upgraded my YDNA test to 67 markers to see if the Dunn matches are more recent than 200 years.

I encourage all male Moons to take the YDNA test and to post those results on YSearch with Family Tree Maker.  I only found out about some of my 37 marker matches after a Dunn researcher shared a chart with the Dunn Family Tree result.  What I found is that not everyone is inputting the data in the YSearch database.  Without doing so, there is no way to match your YDNA with anyone outside of your known family YNDA group.

Obviously, these findings have turned my research 180 degress in another direction.  The only way to know if I am the only one who falls outside the Moon family YDNA is for more male Moons to take the test.

As Denny Moon mentioned to me recently, maybe, just maybe, Dunn was once Munn and that someone changed the name for simplicity???

I am still waiting for my 67 marker YDNA test results from Family Tree Maker and the results are currently over a month late.  I find it hard to recommend use of Family Tree Maker for YDNA testing with these continued delays.  In case I decide to go with another company, does anyone have any to suggest?

my brother and C Moon are the only I1a's on the 16 listed markers on

the rest are R1b's which seems very strange to me
but this science is about 7 years old so there is still alot to learn,
my Moon's are from East Sussex, England, my grandfather emmigrated to Canada around 1912
and C Moon's are from the USA so we must go back to the 1600's for our match somewhere in England i would say,
so please, if any male Moon has the financial ability to test, please do, the test is a swab from the inside of your cheeks, thank you

Still looking for YDNA tested Moons.  Finally got my brother to be tested but the results are not due for 6+weeks.  Trying to find Robert Frederick Moon or a male child to get tested. 

My test results are all Dunn.  I'm hoping to get someone else from the known family descending from Abraham Moon to be tested.  Anyone know of any one that fits the bill and is willing to be tested????

My Moon line goes back to Joseph Moon but the confirmation of his father being James Moon (to Ebenezer Moon eventually to Robert & Dorothy Moone). My family has always insisted that this side of the family is English.

Strangely enough, I think we're from the G Haplogroup (waiting on confirmation).. kind of odd!

Anyway, if any of you are either from the G Haplogroup and/or from the Robert & Dorothy Moone line, please let me know so we can compare.

Hi, I am also a Moon and is very curious to trace back my line as well. My father has done some searching and put a page together of our line of Moons. We got as far as his name is King Moon born in Mass. and moved to area of Washington county of New York state.
