Below is a patrilineal pedigree for my wife's uncle and first cousin.  I am trying to get the cousin (Mark)  to do a DNA test.  Andrew Newell migrated to Massachusetts on the ship Pemaquid in 1640.  His father in law (William Pitt) was an ancestor of the two British prime ministers of the same name.  Andrew Hayward Newell migrated to Australia with his son Andrew Williams Newell on the Magnolia in 1855.

I have completed a DNA test on my Johnston line of ancestors through familytreedna with the help of a Johnston cousin.  My kit number is 213866.  However, I have an exact 37 marker match for the Joshua Newell line.   

My earliest Johnston ancestor was William Johnston, born about 1800 in Georgia.  However, he was living in New Hanover Co., NC by at least 1825, the date and birth location of his oldest child, Sarah Ann Johnston. His next child was also born in New Hanover, my ancestor Patrick Johnston.  Sarah's birth location and date are confirmed by her headstone, and Patrick's is confirmed by his military record. 

Other probable Newells likely related to Joshua Newell are located in Duplin and Brunswick counties in North Carolina from 1786 onward.  Both counties border New Hanover.  I have only one source that my William Johnston was born in Georgia, the 1860 Census.  However, even if he was born in Georgia, I think it likely that his father was probably from this same part of North Carolina.

Based on the exact 37 marker match, I think it likely that either I have a Johnston ancestor who was born sometime during the 1600's-1700's who was originally a Newell, or Joshua Newell has an ancestor that was originally born a Johnston.
