Inscription:  Sacred to the memory of Robert, first Marquis of Londonderry He was born A D 1739, created Earl of Londonderry A D 1796 and Marquis A D 1816 He died at Mount Stewart April 6 1821 and buried in the family vault near this place Through the whole of a long life he devoted himself with unceasing assiduity to promote the welfare of Ireland, residing in the midst of his tenantry, and watching over their interests with solicitude little less than paternal, having attained a mature yet vigorous old age, respected by all who knew his virtue, honored by his tenantry and friends, and tenderly loved by his wife and children, he finished his course on earth, resting his hopes of a blessed immortality on their only true foundation, faith in Jesus Christ In commemoration of his exemplary life, this tablet is erected by his second son Charles William Vane, third Marquis of Londonderry.
