My father was Joseph Alexander Nowlan, son of George William "Willy" Nowlan, born in Saint John New Brunswick. His mother was Marie Celine Daigle. I know nothing of the lineage before this. Can any of my "clan-folk" help?

Brian,
As explained in a separate Email, I have record of the "folk memory" of a grand-daughter of Willy, named Annette, daughter of Firmin Nowlan, who, in 1990, told Eliza Copps (a Nowlan descendant in the Miramichi area) that her grandfather William was somehow related to James and Annie Nowlan of the Miramichi area. For the given timeframe and area, these would have been James Nowlan and Annie Preston of Escuminac. James was the son of Thomas son of James Nowland of Escuminac (see the New Brunswick section of my website http://nolanfamilies.org for further details on this branch.

With best regards, Roger Nowlan (also originally from New Brunswick)

You failed to mention a birthplace for your only known relative. If you believe that birthplace is in the United States, I would look at the following Edward Steed postings on Patrick Jacob Nolan of Co. Cork, Ireland born circa 1848 at Nolan Family Genealogy Forum @ http://genforum.genealogy.com/nolan/all.html.

"I am looking for information about Patrick Jacob Nolan, born about 1848 - 1853, in Cork. He emigrated at an early age to St. Louis, Missouri where he later married Mary Ann Woodlock, immigrant from Tipperary. He had an older sister Ann Nolan."

"I hope that the middle name Jacob is uncommon enough to locate some information about him. He lived for a time as a young man at 1518 O'Fallon Street in St. Louis with what appears to be an extended Nolan family. But I have been unable to pin down any of the residents' relationships.

He died of Consumption, which usually meant TB or something with similar symptoms. He was a stonemason by trade but I am sure the dusty nature of the work would have agravated his condition.

According to my father, who heard it from his grandmother, Patrick spent five years in a TB sanitorium in Denver. He did disappear from St. Louis records in the early 1880s and reappeared in time for my grandmother to be born in 1887. Possibly I could find some records in Denver.

Patrick purchased a cemetery lot containing 3 graves on June 9, 1873. On that very day Miss Bridget Nolan was buried there. She must have been related. Possibly the names of the people buried there will coincide with someone in your family. Those buried at the site, section 7, lot 449 and their ages are:

Miss Bridget Nolan, 30        6-09-1873
Patrick M. Redmond, child        7-28-1875
Margaret Nolan, 73         3-19-1878
Margaret Nolan, child       12-06-1881
Child of Patrick Nolan 12-04-1882
Hanorah Nolan Reynolds, 28        1-25-1883
Patrick Jacob Nolan at least 35 4-17-1888
Mary Ann Woodlock Nolan 77       12-10-1925
Christina Smith, 48, really, 65       12-26-1934
Catherine Nolan Steed, 84        8-18-1971
Sylvester Paul Steed, 89       10-25-1978
Unknown person, age and burial date unknown.

Patrick, Mary Ann, Christina, Catherine and Sylvester are known to me. None of the others have been identified.

Patrick Nolan's sister, Ann, married Patrick's wife's brother, John Charles Woodlock.

Edward Steed"

Good Luck!

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Hello. I'm new here and it seems like everyone here knows what they are doing and knows much about the name Nolan. Maybe you can help me...

I am having a hard time finding much information on the last name Nolan as for my family history.  My family's last name is Nolan. I have found alot in the U.S. and especially in Fulton, Co., Illinois. I know information leading up to my Great-Great Grandfather, but it seems to end there.  I would like to see how far the last name goes and if I can lead it all the way back to Ireland. We also have the middle name Doyle in a few of our family names and I can't figure out where they got the name from.  It has been handed down from my Grandfather to my dad and then to my brother.  To start, my Grandfather's name is Edward Doyle Nolan and he was born on September 17, 1916 and married Ruth Marie Armbrust on Oct. 18, 1952 in Peoria, IL.  My Great-Great Grandfather's name was Luke E. Nolan and was born in Ohio in 1855 and died in Cass Township, Fulton Co. in Illinois. He married Mary Ella Perkins on July 20, 1895 in Fulton, Co., Illinois.  Mary Ella Perkins was born in 1878 and died in Illinois.

My grandfather also had the middle name Doyle: William Doyle Nolen. A branch of my family was in Indiana, however, I have never done any research into Illinois Nolan's. Below are several resources that I use:

US Genweb Project

http://www.usgenweb.org/

Rootsweb/Worldconnect

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/

Census Online

http://www.census-online.com/links/

Family Search

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp

Hope that helps! I will try to look into this family for you and get back to you when I have a chance. I would search the 1850 census at Heritage Quest Online. It is usually free access with a library card from your local library. Go to your local library website, log in using your library card number, and advance search ages and place of birth for members of your surname in the last county in Illinois your family was recorded.

I forgot to mention that you will have to browse the 1850 census for the state and county in Ohio or Illinois.

Thank you so much for the help and sites. I will look into everything. :) The one person I seem to have most problems finding information on is Philip Nolan who was said to be born in 1815.  I found a 1880 and 1870 census threw Ancestry.com (14 day free trial is over, but I will however pay to see more info soon.)  about a week ago.  It shows his name, wife and children. It shows that his parents are from VA, but I can't figure out who they are.  I will be asking a few of my family members to see if they might know. I have noticed that Doyle is also a last name for some Irish Families. I don't know if that leads to why Doyle is in our family names??  I will keep looking and let you know if i find more. Thanks a bunch for your help.

None of the above information is from me. It was posted some years ago on the Nolan Family Genealogy Forum and has nothing to do with my family at all. Philip Nolan possibly could be a descendant of Pierce Noland. Have you checked the following files posted at History of Carlow Clan O'Nolan and Tipperary Clan O'Nolan @ http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nolenancestry/page1c.html.

"The file Descendants of PIERCE NOWLAND (NOLAND) was saved from NOLAND'S of America by Sharon
NOLAND. It is a very large 277 page document be patient when downloading. On 17 February 2007, SUE (NOLEN) AMBURGY provided the file Descendants of JESSE NOLAND and NANCY HICKS as an addendum to Descendants of PIERCE NOWLAND (NOLAND) saved from NOLAND'S of America by Sharon NOLAND, which listed the descendants of JEREMIAH NOLAND and not his brother JESSE NOLAND."

I would also check the US Genweb Project, http://www.usgenweb.org/, for further information on this Philip Nolan. Hope I have been of some help!

No problem! My Nolan family can be found at 1,000 Years of O'Nolan History, http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nolenancestry/page1.html, along with its five accompanying pages. They are a good resource for all Nolan families. Hope I have been of some help!

Endnotes

At this stage of investigation, I am dissatisfied with the results as regards the parents and ancestors of William Nolen.  I am unable to separate the Barnwell Dist (GA border) and Spartanburg (NC border) Nolens or the Absoloms to my satisfaction.  So this is provisional except, obviously, where the documents are unambiguous.

1.  Walter Sowell's notes from William Franklin NOLEN (1886-1964) say that John [?] NOLEN had at least three sons, William, John, and Aaron.  Somewhere I found that the1850 census shows John (75) and Sarah (70) living with Absolom, but I cannot confirm this datum.

2.  According to Brent H. Holcomb, in the 1850 census Absolom says that his father was born in NC.  Rutherford Co NC is 15 miles from Thompson's Creek of Pacolet R., where Nolen family lived, and there were Nolens in Rutherford Co NC.

3.  John was still living in 1852:  Common Pleas 1852 #3702.  Death date from Bible of Mary HUGHEY, probably a daughter.

4.  Maiden name unconfirmed.  B. H. Holcomb believes that Gibson OLIVER was Sarah's father.  There is disagreement over names of John's wife, so perhaps Mary NOLEN was his second wife.

5.  Birthdate and place based on 1850 census.

6.  Info. from B. H. Holcomb, from Bible of Mary HUGHEY, probably a daughter.

7.  Death date from Maude Lee Nolen SOWELLS's notes.

8.  Unconfirmed.

9.  B. H. Holcomb believes that this person was a dau. of John and Sarah NOLEN.  Mary Nolen HUGHEY's Bible registers the death date of "Sally" [Sarah?] Nolen, wife of John, as 7 Aug 1852.

10.  Maude Lee Nolen Sowell (29 Mar 1884-30 Nov 1954, San Angelo TX) made notes, apparently from family Bibles, which her son Walter Sowell copied 28 Jul 1981 and distributed to family members.  Mrs. Sowell's notes that say that William NOLEN married three times and that his mother Mary NOLEN died 23 Apr 1854.  She says only that Wm's second wife was the mother of "Mattie, Matilda, and Lafayette," so the division of the children among the wives is based on dates of birth.

11.  Thomas Pinkney NOLEN's notes have two other death dates:  11 Jun 1881 and 1866.  .

12.  Dates from Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.  Name also spelled Malinda.

13.  Acc. Mrs. Sowell's notes.

14.  Dates from Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.

15.  Walter Sowells' notes are the source of Sarah Hoza Rieves's full name and dates.  Note that birthday is same as second wife's, so there is an error somewhere.

16.  Based on information from Thomas Pinkney Nolen.

17.  Source unknown.

18.  In 1922, the TN Historical Committee sent questionnaires to Civil War veterans, and copy of Wm. Harrison NOLEN's reply is available in the Manuscript Division of the Dept. of Libraries.  It gives his parentage (father Wm. NOLEN born near Columbus [?] GA near the Barnwell Chesterfield [?] SC line;  mother Malinda O'Bannon;  g-father Dawson Burgess O'BANNON, wife unknown, who lived in Claiborne Parish LA), details of farm life before the Civil War, slaves, schools, etc.  He enlisted at Vienna, Jackson Parish LA 20 Jul 1861, in Company H, 12th LA Regiment, was wounded and captured at Corinth MS, suffered at Camp Chase prison.  Released 24 July 1865, he returned home by boat via Mobile, up the Red River to Nachitoches, walked from there to Lisbon LA, moved to TX, and was living at Santo,  near San Benito TX, Cameron Co, aged 86 yrs.       Other information from Thomas Pinkney Nolen, who says that he moved to TX with his father.

19.  Source:  William Franklin NOLEN's notes give no surname but have "Pinkie Sophronia A. " Nolen's dates.  She was admitted to an insane asylum at Terrell TX 21 Oct 1885;  buried in state cemetery grave no. 1319.  Thomas Pinkney Nolen's notes call her "Pinky" Tolbert and say that she died c. 1910.

20.  Walter Sowell's notes call this person Perry, not Peggy.

21.  Information from notes of Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.  "Mattie" Nolen INGRAM lived at Ranger TX.

22.  Information from notes of Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.  The Sides family lived at Ranger TX.

23.  1850 Census shows that John (75) and Sarah (70)  NOLEN were living with Absolom.  Both were born in SC, according to my notes.

24.  Date of birth based on 1850 census.

25.  Susan's birthdate based on 1850 Census.  Susan Nolen and her husband donated land ot Edmond Wooten et al. 2 Oct 1838 as a site for a Methodist church.  This same Wooten gave to Susan 100 acres 16 Oct 1836.  Susan Nolen appears to be related to the families of Wooten and Burnett, to judge from court documents.

26.  Date of birth based on 1850 census.

27.  Middle initial from court records Book MM, p. 202, July 11, 1872.

28.  Birthdate and place based on 1850 census.

31.  Middle initial comes from court records, Book MM, p. 202, July 11, 1872.

32.  Birthdate and place based on 1850 census.

33.  Acc. to Thomas Pinkney NOLEN, "Franky" and her husband settled in Coryell Co TX near Gatesville.  .

34.  Maude Lee Nolen Sowell's notes.

35.  Based on notes of Thomas Pinkney Nolen.  William L. Wallace lived at Canyon, Randall Co TX, had nine children.

36.  Based on notes from Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.

37.  Based on notes of Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.  Elijah S. Wallace had four children.

38.  Acc. Thomas Pinkney NOLEN.

39.  Thomas Pinkney NOLEN's notes give birthdate as 27 Apr 1838.  Birth and marriage date are incompatible.

40.  William Franklin NOLEN's notes say that Nance NOLEN married a MONCRIEf.

52.  Thomas Pinkney NOLEN, in a now-lost letter abt. 1957 to J. R. Jones, says that Sarah Mariah Henry's father, William (as well as he could remember), whose real surname was "Duce" [Douse, Dousse, Douce?] was adopted by the Henry family.  T. P. NOLEN met his uncles, Sarah Mariah's brothers Tom and "Bud," marble-cutters in Waco, when he was a child of 7 or 8.  There were at least two sisters, all from Waco.   Sarah Mariah Henry and her sisters died of tuberculosis.  S. M. H. Nolen died when T. P. Nolen was 3 years old and was bured in a cemetery at Robinson, McClennon Co TX, near Waco.  Her dates are on her gravestone.  In a letter to T. P. Nolen, E. H. O'Dowd, the mayor of Robinson TX, says that the Henry family lived in Robinson until the 1920s, that there are other Henry graves in the Robinson and Lorena cemeteries.    There is a Sarah HENRY b. 1854 in AL living with father Edward (b. MS) and mother Matilda (b. AL) living in Panola Co Tx in 1860 with younger brother and sister, a possibility.  Panola Co is on the LA border.

Hello,

I was searching the web for Nolan family members and found my tree.  My grandmother, Margaret Mary (Peg) Nolan (Benedict) was one of 13 children:   Dan, Nan, Peg, Jim, Tom, Bridget, John (Jack), Mary, Con, Martin, Joe and Nora.  One child died.  They came from Parish Thurles, County Tipperary.  Her parents were Patrick Nolan (1876 -1960) and Bridget Ryan (1878-1960).

--Patrick’s father was Daniel Nolan (1851-1930) and his mother was Margaret Flanagan (1841-1930).  No info on Margaret Flanagan’s family.

--Daniel’s father was Daniel Nolan (1815-1903) and his mother was Catherine Morrissey (1816-1900).

--Daniel’s (1815-1903) father was John Nolan (1773-1850); no info on his mother’s name.

--Catherine’s father was James Morrissey (1795-1875), and her mother was Judith Maher (1795-1875).

Unfortunately, this is where the trail stops.  Are you able to tell me how they fit in to your DNA research?

Here is some “current” information if you wish to add to any Nolan family history cited on weblinks.  Margaret Mary Nolan (1907-1994) married Lawrence Benedict (1899-1964) in 1931 in the U.S. (New Jersey or New York City).  He was first generation American born on Mott Street in NYC of Italian (Napoli) immigrants.  They had three children:  Lawrence Patrick (1931-2003), Margaret Mary (1936- ), and Thomas Louis Benedict (1938- ).

Lawrence Benedict married Erika Brunner in 1954 or 55 and they have one son, Lawrence (1955- ).

Margaret Mary Benedict married Joseph Thomas Kirwin, Jr. (1935-1999) in 1957, and they have three children:  Margaret Mary (1958- ), Kelly Eileen (1960- ) and Joseph Thomas Kirwin III (1965- ).  Margaret Mary Kirwin has two children:  Meaghen Eileen Hampton (1981- ) and William Joseph Hampton (1983- ).  Joseph Kirwin III married Ellen Burns (1971-  ) in 2000.  They have two children:  Emily Joann (2002- ) and Margaret Eileen (2004- ).

Thomas Benedict married Delores (can’t recall last name)  in apx 1961 and they had three children.  They are divorced and I’ve lost contact with the kids, who are now adults.  Thomas wed Rolande Janeiro in 1974  and she has two children.

Thank you so much for whatever information you can provide.

Respectfully,

Peggy
