Dennis,

Here is the link at Ancestry that allows you to look at your Y-DNA results. Let me know what you see there. Is there any reference to STRs?

There are two files there a y-results and a mtDNA results file, both are csv files, in the y-results file there is one line beginning with Haplogroup and a series of codes, there is nothing in the mtDNA file.

It looks like the atDNA test is much different than the y-DNA test and they are not cross compatible accounting to the FAQ over at ancestry.

Do you see the y-results in a spreadsheet with numbers along the top as headers of several columns (like: 393, 390, 19a, 19b, 391, etc., not in that order) and below them other numbers (like: 13, 24, 14, 11, 11, 14, 12, 12, 12, 13, 13, 29, etc., not in that order)? These are the data we need.

I went to Ancestry and found that I had manually entered my STRs.

Thank you,
Dick

It looks like header data only the first line is all headers the second line is just my name and all the columns are blank.  HAPLOGROUP   MRCA   CDYa    CDYb    DYS19

that was the partial line of the first few, there is no numbers below the header. I am guessing this is just another blank file.

I don't know what to say. Those are the names of the STRs. When I look at my y-results at ancestry, I see my values.

I talked with Ancestry, the test doesn't include STR's.  I would have to take a y-dna test, but i have loaded the dna over at gedmatch and found some family matches.  I guess I'll see about ordering a y-dna test and get that uploaded since the test over at Ancestry didn't answer my questions about the Norwood line.

I see. I didn't know that, but I'm not surprised as 23andme, where I have also tested, also does not provide STRs. To use Y-DNA to confirm a paternal line it is necessary to take the Family Tree DNA test of STRs. It is best to get the 67 marker test at least. 111 markers would be better, but I haven't even done that yet.

Once you have your STRs, you can compare your Norwood lineage with those of other Norwoods and confirm your Norwood ancestry. Your surname is Norwood?

If you have your test done by FTDNA, your results will automatically be picked up by our project. Sign up through the Norwood Y-DNA project at FTDNA, and it will cost you less and make your results available to the project.

Sorry this has been so difficult.

Best,
Dick Norwood

Not a problem, I'll get a test done over here as well.  Yes my surname is Norwood, I believe that we are decedent from William Norwood out of Virginia but we don't know for sure.  Thanks for all your help. Dennis

Thanks. I'll watch for your results to come in. Sixty-seven markers would have been better, but you can upgrade later. Thirty-seven should be enough to place you within a lineage.

The first markers are in from Family Tree DNA, the Y-DNA 12 Marker test is done, still waiting on the 25 and 37 marker test.  What do you need to put up my DNA here?
Thanks Dennis

Your results will be added to the results table from FTDNA by WorldFamilies.  We will just have to wait. Administrators used to do this, but the team at the website began doing it some time ago.

My results appear to be in the database, or at least I can see them on the y-results page.  Not exactly sure what this means other than I am in the following group: Haplogroup R1b - Possible Lineage II, which matches up to the people right above me.  Hopefully the other markers will come in and I can narrow it down some more.

I saw that, and am looking forward to seeing the rest of your results. It is very likely that is your lineage.

Looks like all 37 markers are in and they seem to match up to the Lineage II group.  I'll be upgrading to the next series this month.

Hi. Yes, that's good news. Your results have not been expanded, and I don't find you in the Norwood y-dna project at FTDNA. Did you purchase your kit through our project? From your closest match, I think your Benjamin Norwood might be from the following family:

William Norwood, Jr., b.  1731 NC; m. Ruth Wyche
William Norwood, III, b. 1769 Northampton Co., NC; m. Sarah Jeanetta Howard
David Norwood, b. 1808 Chatham Co., NC; m. Nancy ?
James Alexander Norwood, MD, b. 1835 Chatham Co., NC; m. Sarah Ann Snipes
Alpheus Romeo Norwood, b. 1859 Chatham Co., NC; m. Lenora Snipes
Lewis Norwood, b. 1893 Chatham Co., NC; m. Margaret Mann
[B Norwood; not a participant at this time]
Edward Philip Norwood, b. Dec 1821 d. dec 1889
John David Norwood b. Dec 1875 d. 19__
John David Norwood, b. Feb 1905, d. May 1975

You had zero differences from a descendant of the last John David Norwood.

I hope you can find your ancestry back to William of Surry County, VA.

Best,
Dick

I just got the email saying they uploaded the results, they had the 12 marker kit already, the 37 should be in there now.

They still only show the 12 markers, I guess it will take a few hours.
