Pedigrees have been posted on the Pedigree forum and on the Patriarch's page but I am leaving historical biographical information here for the benefit of all those named "Marsalis".
The so called Southern Marsalis lines have a paper trail back to May 9, 1661
with the arrival into New Amsterdam (New York) of the ship DE BEVER
Passenger list : "Pieter Marcelis, from Beesd, with wife, 4 children, 13, 6, 4, and 2 years old and 2 servants" --Holland Year Book 1902
According to the Holland Society Yearbook 1915 Pieter settled at Bergen, N.J. and died there with his burial recorded in the Bergen Dutch Church on September 4, 1682.
In the late 1700s the brothers Ephraim H and Peter H. (Hutchins) Marselis/Marseilles/Merselis left the Bound Brook, NJ area and moved South.
Their great uncle Anthoy Hutchins (brother of their grandmother Hannah Hutchins Marselis Robins) had settled in Adams County, MS after a time in Anson County, NC. The brothers Ephraim H and Peter H. Marsalis became acquainted with their Hutchins relations. Ephraim H. was patroon of one of Anthony's boats for a while as well as serving in the militia. Peter H. also served in the militia and was an Indian interpreter/agent for Panton, Leslie & Company and prospered. His signature is on The Treaty of Fort Confederation, October 17, 1802. However in print it has been misinterpreted as Peter H. Naisalis. A copy of the original obtained from the Washington Archives by William (Bill) Marsalis clearly reads Peter H. Marsalis.
The "H" in his name was finally verified as "Hutchins" on an 1840 land grant.
Peter Hutchins Marselis/Marseilles/Marsalis married and settled for a while on Gordon property in the territory of Georgia (Baldwin/Jones Counties). There he and Mary Magdalene "Polly" Gordon began their large family of 6 boys and 4 girls. A year before MS became a state the couple moved to Amite Co,MS where they continued to prosper and live out their years on thier plantation. Both Ephraim H. and Peter H.and their descendants used the spelling Marsalis. It is pronounced with a soft "a" sound and sounds like Mar-say-lis.
Peter H. (Hutchins) Marsalis died in July of 1846 and Mary in 1862.
Peter Hutchins Marsalis' NJ Dutch roots were so strong that he retained a definite accent. According to a report left by a granddaughter, in Amite he was often referred to as a "Hessian".
His sons were Ephraim, William Peter, Thomas, Patterson, James and John.
The daughters were Sarah, Phoebe, Mariah and Prudence.

Peter H.'s brother Ephraim H. Marsalis settled in Wilkinson County, MS and married Catherine Presler. They had one daughter , Emily.
After Ephraim's death his widow Catherine m William Mc Nulty.
A younger brother of Ephraim/Ephriam H. and Peter Hutchins was John H. who died young supposedly back in New Jersey..
They had one sister, Sarah/Sally who might have moved to Mississippi with them.
Note:
Since the 1930s it had been accepted by most that the oldest Patriarch was the Dutchman Jan Van Marselis I ( early1500s); then his son Jan Van Marselis II; and finally his grandson Gabriel Marselis.
Gabriel had sons Gabriel II, Pieter, Leonard, Sillius and a daughter Anna Sarah Digma
More recent indications say this is probably not our family.
Pieter Marcelis/Marcelisse and family were from Beesd in Gelderland. Dutch records gong back to the 1500s have been found with the name of Marcelis living in Beest/Beesd
