Portaferry was a very important sea-port in the 1700's. Ships brought goods from America
and there were a lot of merchants living there. The tea Clippers would bring tea and tobacco
and the Captains could make more money if they got paying passengers going back to the USA.
A lot of early settlers left the Peninsula for America this way, so their names will never be on shipping lists.
Belfast had only a handful of houses in those days.
