From the Familytreedna website Putnam Home Page there are two yDNA listings reportedly for the Dutch-American Putman family that are completely different.  One an "R" and the other an "I".  Both people reportedly descend from the New Jersey Putman family, which descends, it appears, from David Janse Pootman, the son of Johannes Putman and Cornelia Bradt of Schenectady, New York.  At the current time another, third member of this Dutch family descending from a New York branch of the family will have his yDNA analyzed to determine his markers.  This will be a great contribution to determining the Dutch line yDNA.  Hopefully, we won't have three different types of yDNA and no matches but will have some type of match.

It appears that the Putnam family from New England is well represented in the yDNA results.  We really, need to encourage people from the Pennsylvania German Putman family and the Southern Putman family to participate.

The Putnam yDNA Project is a great asset for Putman/Putnam family genealogists.  Even if you have a last name Putnam or Putman and eventually don't match the yDNA of the major four Putnam families of American, I think that you will be able to determine the lineage eventually using DNA results.  It's just a matter of time.

Mark R. Putnam.
