Lena McVea has sent me a link to a very educational and well produced web site on "Hamilton and Montgomery: the Settlement of 1606":
http://www.hamiltonmontgomery1606.com/Summary.asp
Do check it out. The information is crucial to understanding the history of the Ards Peninsula.
Later, there will be a quiz. (Just kidding!)

Great site!!  I read the 1606 story and noticed 5 things that excited
 me:
1. Dobbin, one of my Stratton ancestor names, was the jailor
2.  Covenanter and Donegal were mentioned in the same sentence, and my
Stratton ancestor was John Shields from Donegal, a Covenanter.
3. Newtownards, HQ for Montgomery is where I found a Stratton
colony 1846 with a James Stratton--possible ancestor.
4. The Scotland branch of Strattons was HQ near where Montmomery was
from in Scotland.
5. Blair is also there--another of my Stratton ancestor names.

Too bad for me there is a 200-year gap to fill, during which time all
my Stratton ancestors could have arrived from anywhere and at any time
before 1822, the only firm birth date I have in Ulster!  Anne jds

A great website and very helpful.  I too recognized many names that pop up in my family 200 years later!
