Genetic Distance & Recent potental James Nolan

I look at the Genetic Distance chart and try to understand the relationships that Glenn suggest and feel I'm missing something. N-5 and N-7 you say are related yet my N-16 should also fit that group, but is not mentioned. N7 seems to be one marker off from N-16 if I am reading correctly. This is where I don't understand. Maybe because N-16 is not included. This does not seem to corelate with the time, in the nearest ancestor chart which seems to say 400 to 900 year distance. Maybe I'm not seeing things correctly.

You have pointed out a James Nolan from the James River of Virginia, born 1756 as my ancestor, potentially. I have looked at that and think that in 1841 an 1842 he was probably to old to have fathered my GGF and his brother, so have started to look for his off spring in SC. I was impressed with your James to discover he was a prisoner in St Augustine during the Revolution having been captured at probably the first battle of Savannah. As he does not tie to the Nolan above (time wise), potentially he came to Virginia or was the off spring of someone who came to Virginia from Ireland after 1700. Not many leads, yet.

On our Nolan DNA Project Discussion page @ http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/n/nolan/disc.html you will find a table labeled Nolan R1b1 Genetic Distance. On the right side of that table is listed N-16, look at the N-16 row (N-16_R1b1  5 8 12 10 14 2 4 1 4 18 4 11 10 13 37 10 8 6 5 0). At the top of the table is also a vertical N-16 row. Your closet matches appear to be N-26 at 0, N-7 at 1, and N-5 at 2.

I am also not satisfied with the Nolan R1b1 - Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor Calculator (Years), the table directly above the Genetic Distance Table, It seems to be wildly inflating the time to most recent common ancestor. Go to your Family Tree DNA personal page click on Y-DNA matches and click on the, what looks like a wrench, icon to the right of your named genetic matches to calculate an accurate Time to Most Recent Common Ancestor. The FTDNA Tip calculator is recorded in generations then multiply the generation number by either 25 or 30 for an average generation, which are the norm for this kind of calculation.

Sorry the potential ancestor research didn't provide any useful information, but keep looking. Hopefully, one day soon you will find the right family connection.

i am trying to find some of my kin. i know that i am irish desent but have know idea the names. i do know that there were two brother who emigrated from ireland and one settle in georgia, then south carolina. my great grandfather is cletus nolan and his father was lonnie nolan. can anyone help?

I went to Heritage Quest Online and searched census records for the names mentioned. These records would be a good starting place for you. They are available free online at Heritage Quest, which is available free from most public libraries with a valid library card ID number.
