From "More Irish Families" by Edward McLysaght, pg. 23:

"MacAlindon    Mr. T. O. Raifeartaigh...states that the former is MacGiolla Fhiondain (the saint there being presumably St. Fintan of Cloneagh... families called MacAlinden are located, or at any rate originated, in the eastern part of Oriel - Counties Armagh and south Down."

"...the modern synonyms of MacAlinden include, besides mere variant spellings*, Linden and Glendon, which in the Jacobite lists of the late seventeeth century is always given as MacLyndon. It is MacElenen and Mac ELynan in the Fermanagh Inquisitions taken in the 1620s and 1630s. They were an important sept in the heyday of the Gaelic order; like the O'Gallaghers and O'Dohertys of Tirconnell they claim descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages and their territory was Fermanagh, their chief being styled Lord of Lough Erne. Their eponymous ancestor was Giolla Finden O'Muldory."

*[Note: The "mere variant spellings" for MacAlinden are MacLindon, MacLinden, MacLendon, MacLyndon, McClendon, Linton, Glendon. MB]
