From: "The Surnames of Ireland," Sixth Edition, Edward MacLysaght, 1999. Sixth edition 1985. Irish Academic Press, Dublin, Ireland:
"Rountree, Roantree: This, also spelt Roundtree, and, having regards to its derivation, more correctly Rowantree, is fairly numerous in Cos. Cavan and Armagh. It occurs in Oriel as early as 1376."*
*Note from Oriel Group Admin: It is because of this early date that we are including the surname Rountree in the Oriel Project. The Rountrees of Cos. Armagh and Cavan, Northern Ireland are thought to have emigrated from England into Ireland. Given this early date of 1376 for Rountrees in Oriel, we are going to test that theory. If our Armagh Rountrees match the Y-DNA test results for the Rountrees in Yorkshire, England, we will be fairly certain that the Rountree family lore is correct, and that they are, in fact, English.
