Occupation "missionary" in 1888

Greetings,
I believe I have located my grandfather on a ship into New York port in 1888. His name was listed as  Boris Levin from Warschau, Russia. Age 16. He was with a small group of several adults and children his age and their occupation was listed as "missionary" on the ship's roster. The family was supposed to have been jewish at some time in their history. Could anyone shed any light on this? Thanks.
