A Letter to all the O’Neill’s

Much has been said and written about the O’Neill’s and their pedigree put in doubt by many who have taken into account the famous Annals of the Four Masters and Annals of Ulster.  With much liberty many of the writings were omitted. These books were written by Irish monks trying to create an Irish version of the Holy Roman Empire. One thing that many have never taken into account is the irresponsible lack of knowledge about the political world of powerful families and dynasties. One just has to look at the Roman or Chinese ruling families to see how it is impossible for one direct male line to exist for countless generations without being replaced. How easy it is for one leader to be replaced by another usually by the sword. Irish clans and Ireland was not the exception unlike popular beliefs.  The Norman invasion of Ireland the influence that the Normans had among the O’Neill’s and Irish clans was a mayor one. The ancient Scandinavian influences in Northern Ireland and Ireland seems to be neglected by many Irish historians and Anthrogenealogist. Niall Glundubh also known as Njall Glundubh the progenitor of the O’Neill’s, there is genealogical evidence that he was born in Norway in 850 A.D. making him most likely of a Scandinavian ancestry. In line with any of these possible Haplogroup R1a, R1a1, I1a, I1c, R1b1c9, R1b1c10 and possibly other yet to be discovered.  Much time has been spent searching for a suspected Royal O’Neill in the R1b1c7 Haplogroup and not much attention has been placed on facts and the truth.  The truth is that no remains of Niall of the nine hostages have ever been found to test for y-dna. His rise and ancestry are up for debate since it is all clouded in myth and legends and not much historical facts. I suggest for all O’Neill’s to research their ancestry with a open mind and take into account all factors that could have occurred in our ancestors past. Regardless of your Haplogroup your surname is O’Neill and for the betterment of our clan we all must strive to find the truth of our origins.

M. O’Neill
