WILLIAM CURRY b.1822-25 SC.  (parents unknown)  was my GG maternal Grandfather.

A  William CURRY & son, NATHANIEL b. 1818-20 SC, were listed in 1840 NEWTON Co., GA. Federal Census.  (Son WILLIAM would have been 18-20 in 1840 and is believed to have left home by the time of this census.  He has not been located on any 1840 Federal Census.)

1840 NEWTON CO. GA. Fed. CENSUS, p. 51
 CURRY, William    50-60  -  (b. 1880-1890) probably FATHER of my Wm. b.
                                      1822-25 SC
            Wife      40-50  -  (b. 1890-1900)
            2 dau.   Under 5  -  (b. 1835-1840)
            2 dau.   5-10  -  (b. 1830-1835)
            1 dau.   10-15  -  (b. 1825-1830)
SAME CENSUS:
 CURRY, Nathaniel  20-30  - b. 1810-1820 - (probably older brother of Wm. M.)
            Wife        20-30  -    (no children)

WILLIAM CURRY married MARY A. HAMMOCK 11-29-1848 in Newton Co., Ga.

1850 NEWTON CO. GA.  Fed. Census enumeration (enumerated June 1950):
    "CURLEY",  William            25   (misspelled)
                   Mary              23
                   Wm. E.            1 mo.
CURRY is misspelled as "CURLEY".  The son would be WILLIAM EDWIN b. 5-12-1850.

WM. & MARY A. CURRY moved to Carroll Co., Ga. before the 1860 Fed. Census:

1860 CARROLL CO. GA. FED. CENSUS, p. 567, line 29, HH #41, dated 7-27-1860:
         CURRY, WILLIAM      38   (b. 1822-24 not 1825 as shown in 1850 Census)
                    MARY          34            (b. 1825-1826)
                    M. E.          10           (This is Wm. EDWIN b. 1-12-1850)
                    MARY           5           (This is MARY E.T. b.c.1855)
                   JONATHAN     3            (My GGrandfather b. 6-22-1857)
THOMAS        1 mo.       (This is THOMAS A. b. May, 1860)

On 5-13-1862 WILLIAM CURRY enlisted in Carroll Co Ga. as a Private in Co., "K", Ga. Volunteer Infantry, Unit 382, Regiment 3344.  He died over a year later in July 1863, between Jackson & Vicksburg, Ms. during the Battle of Champion Hill.  He was awarded a "Distinguished Service" commendation by the Confederate Army.  His personal effects were never claimed.

WILLIAM's widow, MARY A. (Hammock) CURRY and their 4 children cannot be located on any 1870 Fed. Census.

MARY A. (Hammock) CURRY-Moore does appear on 1880 St. Clair Co., Ala. census living next door to their son, JOHNATHAN WASHINGTON CURRY & his family:
1880 ST. CLAIR CO. ALA. FED. CENSUS
     HH75, page 9, ED 117, Beat 4; enumerated 6-11-1880:
                CURRY, JONATHAN       30? (23) HH b. 1857-3rd child of Wm./Mary)
                           Caroline          26           wife
                           Rudolphus         1 mo.      son
     HH.76 (next door) pg 9, ED 117, Beat 4, enumerated 6-11-1880:
MOORE, MARY A.         50   Mother, widow, assists keeping house
                                                      b. Ga. 1830  Cannot read or write.  Did
MARY m. Archibald Moore in Blount
                                                      Co. Ala. 1875?

SUMMARY:

WILLIAM CURRY (my GGGrandfather) was b. c. 1822-25 in S.C.  I do not know his parent's name.

His father possibly moved to Newton Co. Ga. (from LAUREN, S.C.?) before the 1840 Newton Co. Census in which a WILLIAM CURRY age 50-60 & son, NATHANIEL b. 1818-20 SC (& wife) were listed in same HH.  By this time, son WILLIAM b. 1822-25 would have been 16-18 yrs. old and was possibly boarding where he worked.

WILLIAM (son) is listed on 1850 Newton Co. Ga. Census as CURLEY (misspelled) instead of CURRY, where he had m. MARY A. HAMMOCK 2 yrs. prior. They had 1 son, WM. E.

Sometime after the 1850 Newton Co. Census WILLIAM & MARY moved to Carroll Co., Ga., probably because that’s where her parents were living.

WILLIAM & MARY are enumerated in 1860 Carroll Co., Ga. Fed. Census with 3 sons & 1 daughter.

NATHAN CURRY, 45, b. SC is enumerated on 1860 Newton Co. Ga. Census living in Conyers P.O.  This would put NATHAN’s DOB as 1815.  Was he WILLIAM’s older brother?

WILLIAM enlisted in Civil War in 34th Regiment, Ga. Infantry from Carroll Co. Ga. on May 12, 1862 and was killed July 1863 near Vicksburg.

MARY & the 4 children are NOT FOUND in 1870 Censuses of Ga. or Ala. but she IS listed on 1880 St. Clair Co., Ala. Census, living next door to their 3rd son JONATHAN (my GGrandfather) and his wife, CAROLINE (Tyler) and their1st child, JONATHAN.

Amey/Anney/Ann CURRY (1761-1830 - dates from gravestone, see Cemeteries of Marshall County TN, pg 194, Davis Cemetery). Both birth and death years show the particular date as 6 October. She married c1783 to Thomas GARRETT; perhaps in Loudoun Co. VA, perhaps in Pittsylvania Co. VA. The Date of Marriage is estimated from the Date of Birth of their first child. She died probably in Pittsylvania Co., VA; she was living in 1827 when Thomas made his will.

This is the only information I have on her. If anyone has an Ann or Amy who might qualify, I would appreciate the information.
