I recently participated in the National Geographic's Genographic project and that got me interested in my family history. My limited research has led me from Miami to Cuba, and from Cuba to the Canary Islands.

Some background info: In the mid 1800s, Jose Antonio Hernandez Rodriguez (my great great grandfather) moved from Las Palmas to Havana, Cuba. He married Encarnacion Lanue and had one child also Jose Ignacio Hernandez, who moved to Matanzas, Cuba and settled there. My grand father (Leandro Alejandro Hernandez) and my father (Evaristo Evelio Hernandez) were born in Matanzas but moved to Miami, which is where I was born.

If any other Hernandez has taken a similar test, which resulted in Haplogroup I, please let me know if any of the names and places I've posted sound familiar.

We should compare notes.

Hello,  my name is Santiago Hernandez and I also just completed the national geographic test and I ended up in the haplogroup I1b with eh P37.2 marker. Funny thing is that I'm from Colombia and for at least 3 generations my Hernandez branch has lived in Colombia. However, my father remembers that his grandfather spoke German and was of Jewish decent. He I think will choose to take the more in depth test I'll try to update you with any information we receive. Below are my makers with their scores
393 13
19 16
391 10
439 11
389-1 13
389-2 15
388 13
390 23
426 11
385a 12
385b 12
392 11

Cool, let me look at my markers:

DYS 393 -  13
DYS 390 - 22
DYS 19/394 -  14
DYS 391 -  10
DYS 385a -  13
DYS 385b -  15
DYS 426 -  11
DYS 388 -  14
DYS 439 -  11
DYS 389-1-  12
DYS 392 - 11
DYS 389-2 -28

There are a few differences. So we're probably related, but distantly. I have no clear German ancestry but the surname Hernandez is Germanic is origin brought to Spain by the Visigoths, so I'm probably descended from them.

Still, welcome to the family. :)

Thanks Alex,
I'm in the process of getting the more complex DNA analysis done. As soon as I get those results back I'll post them on here as well. Always nice to hear from another Hernandez.
