I'm new to this topic: can anyone shed some light on the significance of the test result I've received placing me in the Haplogroup I*,I1*

Take a look at Charlie Kerchner's yDNA Haplogroup descriptions and see if that helps you understand:  http://www.kerchner.com/haplogroups-ydna.htm
