Arthur Travis, G2 grandson of William Levi Travis, was at a genealogical dead-end. G2 grandfather William was adopted along with his three siblings. He managed to keep his original family name, but he passed down no knowledge of his ancestry. In order to circumvent this dead-end, Arthur decided to submit a DNA sample for testing.
Out of the 37 markers from his Y-DNA that were tested, Arthur had a 33 out of 37 match with Larry Travis. Although this is not a perfect match, according to Family Tree DNA, Arthur and Larry are ‘probably’ related.
Larry is the G8 grandson of Garrett Travis. In order to get a better understanding of the relationship between Arthur and Larry, any direct male descendants of Garrett Travis are encouraged to submit their DNA for comparison. The benefits of having your Y-DNA tested go far beyond helping to confirm Arthur and Larry’s relationship. It will also confirm any paper genealogical records the tester has that link them to Garrett.
As all genealogists know, not all genealogy records are 100% reliable. DNA testing is a way of providing very strong corroboration of those paper records.
As well, there is the potential for revealing previously unknown relationships by having one’s DNA markers compared with the 10’s of thousands of other people in Y-DNA comparison databases. This number continues to grow daily.
