From an email sent by William Howe [abracabra2512 AT yahoo.co.uk]:

"By way of introduction, I am William Benjamin Howe son of the last named Benjamin Howe.
When I searched back into a transcript of the records by Moretonhampstead Historical Society, the transcriber was unsure whether George’s surname was Who, Hoo or How and listed all three. By a couple of generations it seemed to settle into How before been changed to Howe in 19th century when they lived in Somerset.  Searching names around N Devon about 16/17 century there are a number of Who, Hoo names emanating out of Bidiford from mid 16th century.  Apparently Bidiford at that time was the third most important English seaport and it seems to me that some How folk turned up there from another part of the country with a different dialect – say Suffolk (think of Sutton Hoo burial mound) – and that it took the Devon folk several generations to untangle the pronunciation.  So, the point of this preamble is that you may well have the names Who and Hoo and variants which might link?  Anyway, here goes:

George Who b 1600 Devon m Wilmote Worthy
George Who bap 10 Sep 1626 Moretonhamstead, Devon m Mary Hutchings
George How bap 11 Dec 1659 Moretonhamstead, Devon m Tamsin Endacott
James How bap 28 Dec 1686 Moretonhamstead, Devon m Ann Shercumb
William How bap 27 Dec 1720 Moretonhamstead, Devon d 1760s Barnstaple, Devon m Joan Frain
William How bap 6 Mar 1741 Barnstaple, Devon m Susanna Small
Nathaniel How b 1778 Chipstable, Somerset d 19 Jul 1829 Wiveliscombe, Somerset m Joan Rogers
John Howe b 13 May 1810 Champfleur, Somerset d 1850s London m Mary Eastway
William Howe b 20 Oct 1827 Pilton, Barnstable, Devon d Deptford, London m Matilda Roberts
Benjamin Richard Howe b 25 Jul 1867 Deptford, London d 24 Jun 1929 London m Ellen May Arnold
Benjamin Howe b 5 Sep 1898 Rotherhithe, London d 26 Nov 1986 Worcester, UK m Elener Maud Nelson"
