Might be posted somwwhere else (cant find it though),
but I found it interesting to look into the actual origin of my surname and the meaning of the name.

Would like to recommend some websites I found:

http://www.searchforancestors.com/surnames/origin/r/ramirez.php? brief description of Ramirez for example

and

http://www.surnames.org/apellidos/lista.htm, which? (for me) gave an extensive historic background to my family name - Ram?rez.

Also, the fact that Spain "always" uses/used two family names (fathers first and mothers first) should, if records exist make it very easy to follow lineage backwards in history. Andale!

And, to add more, have a look at pages like http://www.houseofnames.com/xq/asp.fc/qx/ramirez-family-crest.htm,
