I am Beverly Jane Smith Leach. This is my story as I have deducted it. Some is known to be true and some of it is by connecting the dots. Most information in KY is gleaned through census information. After 1850 where names of family members are available it is much better. I am searching for confirmation of Joseph Madison Smith (JMS), his wife and his parents who are said to have been born in PA.

Joseph Madison Smith was born in Lewis Co Ky in 1824. His parents are uncertain, but from deductions I feel his mother (or step-mother) was Mahala with est. b. of 1800, and father Joseph D. Smith with estimated b. 1785 both born in PA. Joseph D. died between 1840 and 1850 censuses. Mahala died between 1850 and 1860 censuses. If their first son was Josiah he was born in PA and came with them to KY. as a newborn, or about the age of 1 year. A son John A. (or B). b. 1826 Greenup Co. KY d. 1912 Portsmouth OH, and daughter Theresa (Thirza) b. 1843 KY d. 1872 Clinton Co., IN.? There is a 15 year difference between Theresa and girl four born 4 born in 1828, hence my guess she may have been a second wife. Mahala would have been about 43 and Joseph D. 58. There is evidence of connection of Mahala, John A.(or B.) and Thirza in both 1850 and 1860 Greenup Co KY censuses.

John A.(or B.) Smith b. 1826 d 1912, married Dorcas D. Waring and they had 7 children by 1870 Greenup Co Census. I think I found John A. Smith in home of one of his children later, but cannot find that right now.

Joseph Madison Smith (b. Lewis Co KY 1824 d. Clinton Co. IN 1 Nov 1898) married Jemina Crull (JCS) (b. OH 8 Mar 1818 d. Clinton Co IN 19 Dec 1873) m Portsmouth OH 25 Apr 1850. They had four children Ralph Silas, William Alhander, Mary Ann, and John B. all born in Scioto Co, Buena Vista, OH where they lived until 1863 when they moved to Clinton Co. IN. I have some letters JMS wrote JCS during the Civil War when he enlisted during 1865 and in VA. The original letters have disappeared, but my father copied the contents in a notebook.

After Jemina died in 1873, JMS married Maria Margaret Cunningham of Clinton Co IN (b. 25 Mar 1839 d. 29 May 1923 Clinton Co IN) m. 14 Mar 1876 in Clinton Co IN. This couple had three children: Ruhana Smith (m. Rose), Edward and Charley. Edward Smith was my grandfather. Edward Smith married Myrtle Marsh and they had four children, Marvin Albert, Frances and Edna Jean. Marvin is my father.

There is a William Smith (l) in my early Smith information. I cannot really tell if he is a son or a nephew of Joseph Madison Smith. The William Smith (l) I have was born in 1812 in KY. He lived and died around Lewis Co. and Greenup Co KY between the censuses of 1880 & 1890 and lived at that time with son Charles. William (II) had a son, William (III) who was born in 1847 in Greenup Co KY. His wife may have been Amenia and their sons were George C. and Albert G. (1870 Greenup Co KY census).

I now have our line of y-DNA posted on the Northeastern Smith project, kit #63259.
