The descendants of Bertrand Chesnay dit Lagarenne, (Feb 1622 - 17 Jan 1683). Variations of his surname include: Chaigné, Chainay, Chainé, Chainey, Cheeney, Chenay, Chené, Cheney, Chenez, Chénier, Chesnay, Chesné, Chesney, Chesnier, Shaney and Sheney. There are others but they are few in numbers. Bertrand Chesnay arrived in Québec around 1650 and became a prominent and well to do business man. He had a large piece of land, a Seigneurie, near present day Château-Richer, about 10 miles east of Québec City. He also had a hotel in Lower Québec City, a drinking and room service establishment combined. He was also a fisherman, roaming up and down the St. Lawrence River catching and selling his fish. His detailed personal history can be found on my website at: http://chesnay.homestead.com/
Please enjoy what I have of his descendants to this day.

It should be note that in addition to the above short historical note that the variations of the surname Chesnay was change dramatically when it "migrated" from Canada to the USA. Predominantly in the USA the name Chesnay became: Chenez, Cheeney, Cheney, Chesnay and Shaney due to miss-spellings and pronounciations.

The actual purpose of this Chesnay project is to determine if there is a DNA link to the family name Chenette or Chenet. This family name lineage has been researched for decades with an almost "dead end" at it's first progenitor, Alexis Chenet/Chenette who married Marguerite Breault in L'Assomption Qu?bec 6 Sep 1767.

There is a possibility that Alexis Chenet/Chenette may be a descendant of the Bertrand Chesnay lineage. Paper research to connect the Chenette/Chenet family tree to the Chesnay family tree has been very extensive but no actual proof has been found.? With this DNA project we hope to open up a new avenue in our research methods.

Anyone wishing to join DNA research group is most welcome.
