I would like to edit my pedigree to show that I tested my Y DNA and Mt DNA and found I had YDNA of R1b (Celt) (that should also be true of my father, James McGowan Stratton, and up through the line in the posted pedigree) and Mt DNA of U5 (Northern European)--(that would be my mother, Anna McGregor Aikman, in the pedigree.) 
I am new here in this Stratton Surname project, and glad to find you.  The ancestors I know about all came from Scotland & the North Ireland Scottish plantations. Coal miners south of Glasgow most recently---then coal miners in PA when my 4 grandparents  and my mother immigrated to the USA. From the internet I gather the name is English in origin.  Most probably from Cornwall on the extreme SW coast of England, site of tin mining since the Bronze Age. There is a town on the coast called Stratton which used to be a big market town in the Middle Ages. This is where the "Stratton 100" land area was located--enough land to supply 100 warriors for an army--perhaps dating back to Roman times; maybe before.  Not facts--just stuff off the internet which are probably facts. Do any of you agree or have other ideas on the origin of our name?  Posted on behalf of jds

I think that it is fairly well accepted that the name Stratton originates from Roman times and refers to a place name.  The Old English 'Straet - tun' means a 'fence, enclosure, homestead (and hence Village or Town) on a Roman road.  The many Stratton (and Stretton) places in England are virtually all situated on Roman Roads.  The Normans introduced the concept of surnames and, following the Conquest, people adopted one.  These came mainly from either their occupation, employer or where they lived.  There were certainly aristocratic Strattons from the 11c (Adam de Stratton etc) who owned large areas of England so our ancestors were probably their 'serfs' or just happened to live in a village called Stratton.  My own research indicates that the earliest identifiable Stratton lines were in East Anglia and these spread progressively westward from there through southern England, the largest concentration being in Wiltshire and Hampshire.  The Stretton lines were mainly in the West Midlands areas (Staffordshire etc) where the place names are largely spelt with an 'e'.  Of course, with the low level of literacy, the surname spelling became fairly interchangeable as the Parish Clerks and Census Enumerators wrote down the name either the way they were used to doing or what they thought the individual had actually told them - with regional dialects it's still difficult to deduce the 'correct' spelling even today!

Thank you so much for uploading all the new Stratton ancestors and corrected dates I found recently on to the Stratton Patriarchs section.  I got the information from what used to be Cambusnethan Parish near Glasgow---2 death records and a marriage record I ordered from Scotlandspeople.  They showed names, dates, and past generations of my Wishaw, Scotland ancestors in the mid-1840's.  From that I found Gortnamoragh, Derry, Ulster, Ireland in about 1820 as a birthplace. (Our family had thought they were all from Scotland). Researching that information I found the Bann River Valley web site with lots of old church records and found my ancestor James Stratlin (and John Stratlin and Samuel Stratton all) there---a James Straghan too---probably my same ancestor.  So far I have found 8 different spellings of my Stratton name---they were illiterate and had to just say their names to the officials.
They left Ireland in 1847 during the Potato Famine for the Glasgow coalmines.  They left Scotland for the Pennsylvania coalmines in 1872.
Trying to research back in time, I know they were Presbyterians in Ulster, but I would like to know where they were before that and when they arrived in Ireland. Best bet is colonists from London or Scotland during the 18th Century.  Some Irish natives also changed their surnames early on--less likely but possible. Covenanter Army, Cromwell, etc.  Does anyone have any clues about Strattons in Ireland mid-19th century and before?  Now I am reading about the Ulster Plantations. Thank you, jds

Hello all, I tested my DNA via genebase and came back with a 20-marker match, genetic distance 2, with the Strattons who originated in Podington, Bedfordshire and came to New England in the 1630s.

My family, on the other hand, is Southern (although having lived in NYC for twenty years I consider myself a Yankee by naturalization). The name is Holloway, like the road, borough, prison, and college in London. Would anyone have any ideas on how the Stratton line might have gotten to Dixie (Virginia) in the late 1720s?

Family tradition holds that 1) we were indentured servants who came to work the tobacco plantations and 2) "Scots Irish."

As far as the latter goes, please permit me a bit of speculation. That the Strattons came to New England in the 1630s indicates attachment to the Puritan belief. Additionally, Podington is close to the Cambridge/Huntington stomping grounds of Oliver Cromwell. It's concievable, I guess, that a Stratton was in Cromwell's army, and was given land in Ireland after Cromwell's campaign there in 1649 (as many of the New Model were).

At any rate, interesting to find this close link and I deeply appreciate any light anyone can shed on this subject.

  I have a family bible with the name Carolyn Stratton, born in Harvard, Mass on April 21, 1810. She married Albert Randall, born in Stow, Mass, on Sept. 13, 1814.
